Importing a wordpress.com site to my wordpress.org site

    Hi there, I have been following instructions to change a wordpress.com site to my wordpress.org site using the export / import functions on each site but after downloading the site and then uploading to the .org site I receive this message: Sorry, there has been an error.
    This does not appear to be a WXR file, missing/invalid WXR version number
    What should I do?

    Hi there,

    Did you receive as the export file a file ending in .xml or ending in .zip? If your file ends in .zip, you first need to extract the Zip folder. Then you will import the individual .xml files inside it.

    To extract a .zip file in Windows, right-click on the file and select the Extract All option.

    For more help with importing to your self-hosted site it’s better to post directly in the WordPress.org forums at https://wordpress.org/support/. We have no control over the importer for your self-hosted site, and the users in the .org forums will be more able to help you troubleshoot any importing issues you may encounter.
