Importing media from campuspress to wordpress

When I use the export / import function in campuspress to wordpress, the pages transfer, but the media files stay in the original site in campuspress. Campuspress have reported the following reason:

1. WordPress.com isn’t importing media files from blogs hosted on CampusPress blogs.
2. WordPress.com does import media files from blogs hosted on Edublogs.org.
3. CampusPress blogs serve their media files from a CDN. CDN is used to increase page load speeds. Media files on blogs hosted on Edublogs.org aren’t served from a CDN.WordPress.com has their own custom importer. I’ve tested the default WordPress importer on a self hosted WordPress blog and the media files are being imported. This indicates that their custom importer on WordPress.com doesn’t know how to handle CDN redirects and this is preventing the media files to be imported.

To what site are you trying to import? I don’t see any recent imports in the logs for http://annalarmstrong.wordpress.com/
We fetch media files from the media file URL that appears in your post or page HTML, and subsequently in the export file. In a typical WordPress installation that media file URL would point to the site’s media folder. If Campuspress uses a CDN that’s set up in such a way that it’s not possible for us to access those file URLs directly, or if the export file contains links for the CDN rather than direct links to the media files in the media library, that’s not something we can do anything about.

… that actually means that wordpress.com importer will neither import images outside the uploads directory, nor follow redirects to such files, is this correct?
I am asking, because that is in contrast to how the WordPress importer (https://wordpress.org/plugins/wordpress-importer/) works, if you select download and import file attachments. The media files are imported from the CampusPress blog if you use the WordPress importer on self hosted WordPress.
The wordpress.com importer does claim to:
Import posts, pages, and media from a WordPress export file.
I can provide an export file from a blog hosted on CampusPress if you would like to run your own tests.

Are you the same person as the OP?
If so, please provide the URL of the site you’re trying to import to so I can check it, as the site indicated above has not had any recent import attempts.

Please don’t misquote and misrepresent what I said. I said “If Campuspress uses a CDN that’s set up in such a way that it’s not possible for us to access those file URLs directly…” I said nothing about what the importer will or won’t do. I proposed a theory of what might be going on here.
The WordPress.com importer is built on the default WordPress importer plugin, and the only changes we’ve made to it is to add support to automatically extract .xml files from .zip folders and to make it more reliable fetching media files from remote sources, as the default plugin is notorious for failing in that regard.
I can provide an export file from a blog hosted on CampusPress if you would like to run your own tests.
If I know the site you’ve imported to I can download the file directly from there, and then I can check whether we’re able to fix the broken images in the import.

I’m from CampusPress and part of the team that supports Anna who originally submitted this support request. Sorry and I should have explained that when I left my reply.
I can’t share the original URL she was importing from as it was originally private only viewable to logged in users. It was changed to block search engines while she was importing. All our testing has been while the site has been set to block search engines.
I’m happy to provide the export file from another site hosted on CampusPress which you can use for your own tests.
Anna may be willing to share the URL of the original site but that is a question she needs to answer.
I also understand that you were providing a theory as to what might be happening and you haven’t had the benefit of being able to run your own tests. We’ve run tests on CampusPress hosted sites and single install WordPress (not hosted on our servers). We have confirmed that both the default WordPress importer is capable of importing the media files from CampusPress hosted sites and that our own custom WordPress importer is able to import the media files.
I also agree that the default WordPress importer is notorious for failing with importing media files. Your WordPress.com importer has always been excellent so we were surprised that one of our users reported an issue.
All our testing indicate there is a possible issue with your WordPress.com importer.

I’m not asking for the CampusPress site you’re exporting from. I’m asking for the WordPress.com site
annalarmstrongis importing to. It’s impossible to troubleshoot an import issue on the WordPress.com site, if I don’t know what that WordPress.com site is.I’m happy to provide the export file from another site hosted on CampusPress which you can use for your own tests.

Ok, the problem here is that our importer just isn’t seeing the attachment URLs. It actually thinks there is no media to import.
Which, I agree is very very wrong here.
I noticed you mentioned the site was private earlier, and that would have been a blocker, we can’t import media from sites that are not publicly visible, but that’s actually not the case here. The site _is_ publicly visible to those with the link, so there’s no way we shouldn’t be able to bring at least some of those images across.
The fact that it’s none, and that our importer doesn’t even ask if we want to import the images, is not good.
I’ve reported this up to our developers, and we’ll let you know as soon as we know something.

Ok, our importer developers have found the problem and they’ll get this fixed up tomorrow (July 5) as it’s a bit late where they live right now.
We’ll let you know as soon as it’s fixed, but until then, please don’t touch anything regarding media on either the exporting or importing site.

I’ve tested your importer using a different blog hosted on CampusPress and confirmed the media files are now being imported into the WordPress.com test blog I am using.
