Importing My Site

I have all the files for my website but they’re not in XML format – is there a way I can convert them?

  • Hi there,

So it sounds like you have a full-site backup provided to you by a previous host, correct?

There’s no way to upload that to WordPress.com, as we use a modified version of the WordPress software which means your site and database files are not completely compatible with what we use here. That’s why we only support standard WordPress imports.

To convert what you have into an XML file, you’ll need to upload it to a stand-alone WordPress installation first, and then do an XML export from that site.

If your hosting account is still active, I recommend you contact your previous host and ask them to help you with this process. Even if it’s already cancelled they might still be able to do something.

If your hosting account for your site is no longer active, you can instead install WordPress on a virtual server directly on your computer, upload the files there, and then export. But if you have any media files included on your site they likely won’t import on our end, in that case, as we’ll have no way to access them on your computer’s hard drive during the import.
