Importing Self-Hosted WP Sites

  • Unknown's avatar

I am considering moving two self-hosted sites onto WordPress.com and have performed a test Export / Import from my company site/blog.

While on the face of things it looks OK, there are items missing from the Media Library (non-image assets, i.e. downloads).

If there a mechanism to upload a full site, i.e. from an archive created on the server itself (rather than an export file from within the site)?

The other site will encounter the same issue and I’m wondering whether this will be a worthwhile exercise – or whether to endure the continued admin of server updates etc.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there, are these the directions you’re following to import your self-hosted site?
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/coming-from-self-hosted/ or https://transferto.wordpress.com/self-hosted-wordpress-org/

Are those download files attached to a page or post on your old site or are they unattached? If they are not attached, try attaching them and then export/import again. The importer here in your MY SITES dashboard should not duplicate already existing entries. There is a chance however that you will need to manually upload and insert them to your imported site.

If there a mechanism to upload a full site, i.e. from an archive created on the server itself (rather than an export file from within the site)?

It may be possible under the Business or eCommerce plans, but as don’t know the answer to that so I have also added a MODLOOK tag for Staff assistance. Thanks for your patience while they get back to you.

Thanks for the prompt response – much appreciated.

I’m happy to go with a Business plan for these sites (as I need/use plugins) – I’m just trying to minimise the potential hurdles I may face.

That said, it may be a good housekeeping exercise to have to revisit things like this and maybe do things differently. My client’s site may be a different matter though as it uses PODS so many of the assets maybe detached and not portable.

This isn’t a desparate migration, I have time on my side here :-)

I’ll wait to here from ‘Staff’ so see if there is a lift and shift option – I have archives of the file structure from the server and a SQL dump for both sites.

  • Howdy –

    Thanks for the tag, justjennifer.

Yes, you can use the All In One WP plugin migration to move a copy of the current site over to WordPress.com. You’ll need to have a business plan added first.

    Check it out at: https://wordpress.org/plugins/all-in-one-wp-migration/

Thanks for that – I’ll have a look.

I’ve taken the opportunity to revisit my site configuration and use a more stable theme as well as fewer plugins.

The client site will probably have to come over as-is so I’ll be sure to give that plugin a shot :-)
