Inability to add Amazon.com Affiliate Links

  • Unknown's avatar

With my change to this new theme, I am no longer able to add Affiliate links to household safety products on Amazon.com Has your policy changed?

The links that were in place with the old them are no longer there and I am unable to add links in the picture or in a sentence below the picture?

    Thank you, Julie

  • A theme change should not affect old post content nor the ability to add new content.

Can you give me a specific example of something that you are unable to add? Is there a draft post I can look at? Or an old post that SHOULD have the links but now does not?

    Dear Rootjosh:

Here’s a blog that has 2 photos that I tried to add affiliate links: each photo had it-s own link. It worked fine in my old theme.

I tried to add the links in my new theme & it did not work. I tried to add a line of text below a picture and add a link and it would not work. I tried this below each picture.

I tried putting the raw text-only gobbledygoop in the post and it worked but looked like heck. Part of the text was highlighted and part was not. This would have made it tough to work forvmyv readers.

    Thank you for your help!

    Julie

  • Was there a link you meant to add into that response?

  • I’m sorry, but I’m not seeing a post at http://twostepsolutions.com/category/active-tips/h

I just get a page not found error.

  • So here is some code that I found in a previous revision of that post:

    <a href="http://iframestyle=width:120px;height:240px;marginwidth=0marginheight=0scrolling=noframeborder=0src=//ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&OneJS=1&Operation=GetAdHtml&MarketPlace=US&source=ac&ref=qf_sp_asin_til&ad_type=product_link&tracking_id=nehobely-20&marketplace=amazon&region=US&placement=B005JIJRZ2&asins=B005JIJRZ2&linkId=IYTQ27UT4SSKY5Q6&show_border=true&link_opens_in_new_window=true"><a href="//ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&OneJS=1&Operation=GetAdHtml&MarketPlace=US&source=ac&ref=qf_sp_asin_til&ad_type=product_link&tracking_id=nehobely-20&marketplace=amazon&region=US&placement=B005JIJRZ2&asins=B005JIJRZ2&linkId=IYTQ27UT4SSKY5Q6&show_border=true&link_opens_in_new_window=true">//ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&OneJS=1&Operation=GetAdHtml&MarketPlace=US&source=ac&ref=qf_sp_asin_til&ad_type=product_link&tracking_id=nehobely-20&marketplace=amazon&region=US&placement=B005JIJRZ2&asins=B005JIJRZ2&linkId=IYTQ27UT4SSKY5Q6&show_border=true&link_opens_in_new_window=true</a></a>

That embed code will not work because we do not allow certain tags on WordPress.com, for security reasons, including JavaScript, Flash, iframe, form, and input tags.

These restrictions are in place to prevent any disruptions in service due to potentially malicious code.

You can read more about this here:

    Code

Changing your theme should not have made any difference, as this type of code has never been allowed on WordPress.com. Could you have been using text links before? Or just created image links manually?

    Dear rootjosh:

I am not a programmer and really cannot decipher the tutorial you sent! I do not want to do anything improper for sure.

Please tell me, how do I find code on amazon.com (Called “Get Link”) that is acceptable for this business website? I have no problem using “Text Only” code from amazon.com for my http://www.justjuliewrites.com website.

    Thank you,

    Julie

  • If you use the “text link” version of amazon referral links you will be fine. Here’s a screenshot:

You do not want the code that says “frame” or “iframe” in it.

Say I don’t think that is an affiliate link but I’ll look around on the affiliate site and try again. You can make a custom widget but I haven’t been able to figure it out.

    Lots of buts here!

  • It is an amazon affiliate link. It has my wife’s affiliate tag in there. It may be a different interface than you use to generate links. But it is a completely normal affiliate link.

    Dearest root:

I tried it again and it did not work. What’s up?

    Julie

  • Can you walk me through exactly what you are doing when you try?

Where are you getting your links from? Here? https://affiliate-program.amazon.com/gp/associates/network/build-links/individual/main.html or somewhere else?

When you make a post, what steps are you taking and where does it fail?

Here is a post on my test blog with an amazon associates text link:
