Interface with my website using WordPress not working

Hi. I’ve just taken over the website management for xxxxxx.com.au and have an internet provider host the site for us. We have an account and use WordPress as the editor for the site. I cannot get the editor to work when I am logged in. I get a whole bunch of code before seeing what is represented in text. The editor, as I recall using WordPress in the past, is like using Word documents. What am I doing wrong? The host provider says its a WordPress interface issue. Is that correct and if so how can I correct it so I can use the easy editor to amend and update our website? Thanks
