Internationalized Domain Name registration

Is it the case that WordPress can not handle the registration if IDNs? I tried registering, let’s say, amá.org as a test. I also put in the puny code, trying to register it that way. I got this reply, ‘Domain cannot be mapped to a WordPress.com blog because of disallowed term.’ using amá I get, ‘am.org is already registered. Do you own this domain? Transfer it to WordPress.com now, or try another search.’
This is all very important to me because in the sale Google Domains to Squarespace, I was interested in Word Press’ Offer to jump ship, but I have many IDNs.
