invites getting redirected to wrong email
-
I am trying to invite a new user to our site. I enter a valid gmail address to the invite button, but the invite gets redirected to
wildlybluebirda6736d5b91
@wildlybluebirda6736d5b91
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there, can you please share the two email addresses that are involved? Add them here normally and the forum software will redact them from public view, but staff will still be able to see them.
As an example (email visible only to moderators and staff)

According to the AI-assistent:” If the person already has a WordPress.com account linked to that email address, the invite will be sent to their WordPress.com account rather than their email inbox. That’s just how WordPress.com handles invites when it recognizes the email as an existing account.”
-
Thanks @staartmees I was just coming back to say that WordPress.com also randomly assigns such usernames, but the user can change their public display name in their account settings. https://wordpress.com/me

Hi @rboothe!
The username you’re seeing actually belongs to the person you invited. It’s linked to the email address you used, so the invitation is going to the right account. That person just needs to accept the invitation on their end. If they’d like to change their username or how their name appears, they can do that by following this guide:

To the staff at WordPress: Please see the email from rboothe, dated 22 April. Something strange is going on here. My email address has been associated with wildlybluebirda6736d5b91@wildlybluebirda6736d5b91. I have no idea what this link is – completely foreign to anything I might have created. In fact, I was not even aware that I had a WordPress account. How may my email address — not the username, but my email address — be unlinked from the wildlybluebird address? I’d also like information on how this account has been established with my email address, which, ironically, I’ve used to log in. Thank you.

Hey @wildlybluebirda6736d5b91 and @rboothe!
While we can’t go into specifics on a public forum thread, I noticed that the account for wildlybluebirda6736d5b91 was created about 3 weeks ago. Our logs don’t show who exactly created it, however, if you suspect this was not created by you, please consider closing it or changing the email address to something else to remove yours:

@wildlybluebirda6736d5b91 is it possible you subscribed with your email address to @rboothe’s website? If so, AFAIK, WordPress.com creates a new account for you automatically when you do and assigns a random username at that time.
You can change your username following this guide

Thank you, Robert and Jennifer. The username issue is now fixed. During the process, I apparently checked something that blocks invitations, and am unable to find a way to reverse this to allow invitations. Can you help?
-
Hello again, Glad to hear that you got the username issue sorted.
About blocked invites that will require staff assistance and I’ve added the MODLOOK tag to notify them of the issue. Thanks for your patience.
-
Hi @keithcward! Invitations aren’t blocked on your account at the moment. If someone is trying to invite you and seeing an error, please let us know, and we’ll email you to continue investigating.
Have a wonderful day!

When I tried to invite keithcward to be an administrator on the
Tacoma Retired Mens Bookclub site
the following popped up right under the invite request:
User blocked invites
Just tried it again and the same thing happened.
-
Hi @rboothe and @keithcward! I’ve checked @keithcward’s account and see that account is already subscribed to the Tacoma Retired Men’s Bookclub site.
Keith, you can see that and edit your subscriber settings from this page here: https://wordpress.com/reader/subscriptions/835520454
-
Hi @rboothe and @keithcward,
The “User blocked invites” message means that keithcward’s account currently has invite emails blocked. This can happen accidentally, such as by clicking a “block” link in a previous invite email.
@keithcward, to unblock your invites, please open an incognito/private browser window and visit this link:
You should see a confirmation message that says “You will now receive invite emails again.”
Once that’s done, @rboothe, you can re-send the invitation and it should go through this time.
Let us know if you run into any issues!
