Is Ad-links SPAM Getting Worse?

    There was mention of ad-links-SPAM
    https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/advertising-links-in-clicks/

Lately I have been getting a lot of clicks from countries where English is NOT a typical language.

It has been accompanied by some of the out-click SPAM.

Is this a problem for WP? I appreciate the clicks on the inbound-side, but really, REALLY, don’t want to be contributing to SPAM.

My monthly clicks count is an order of magnitude higher than it was a year ago. And most of that growth is in non-English-speaking countries, in the past 4 months.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

I looked at your stats and didn’t find anything out of the ordinary. The surge in visits are from India which is a country where English is an official language.

Also, note that English is spoken approximately by a quarter (approx. 2 billion) of the world population.

Thanks for looking. Like I said, I appreciate the extra clicks, but REALLY don’t want to be involved in SPAM.

  • Since your site is public, anyone can access it, we have no control over who visits your site.

I realize that. I worked in Information Technology for longer the WordPress.org or WordPress.com have been in existence.

BUT there IS SPAM attacking the ad system. Look at the out-bound clicks stats of my blog and you can see links to SPAM sites that are not linked anywhere in Blog, or in ANY comments I can find.

I opened a topic on this a while back and got a similar non-answer….

Don’t. Be. So. Condescending. To. Your. Customers.

Some of us are not the idiots you think we are.

And if you really cared about SPAM, instead of just proving how SMART you are compared to us poor user shlubs, You might consider actually attacking the OUTBOUND AD CLICK SPAM which is still SPAM, still reflects poorly on both my blog and wordpress.com.

    Oh, and for clarity…

Some of the outbound-click SPAM sites also show in the inbound referrals. Not in large quantities, but they do show up in the stats.

It is in the nature of this kind of software that it tries to hide what it is doing from people running servers. Perhaps someone in your organization who familiar with security can explain the concept to you.

So in a nutshell. You have a SPAM problem. (That is visible.) You may have a much bigger problem, that would require research from inside the organization. But if you don’t care about any of this, then I guess I don’t either.

  • Referrer spam and click spam is a common thing on the web, like comment spam and email spam.

It works by a bot or infected browser falsifying the referrer and click records. It’s not hard to do, and it’s a problem faced by all stats systems, even Google Analytics.

As with all spam, there isn’t really a way to stop it for good, goodness knows if we could we would, we can only mitigate it.

We do our best to monitor up and coming referrer spam and hide those from your stats. If you see any that got through, please follow this guide to report them: https://wordpress.com/support/stats/#marking-spam-referrers

We are currently considering extending this to clicks too.

    Thanks for that link.

My issue is mostly with fresatomica and her condescension.

I have (unfortunately) found that “support” at WP is convinced we users are all idiots.

    She is an egregious example.
