Is it possible to transfer free domain wordpress.com to another host
-
I’m just learning how to use wordpress at the moment, so I want to create a free domain under wordpress.com and then host it somewhere else. By doing this, I can try more plugins and other features which are unavailable from wordpress.
Someone said to me only custom (paid) domains fro wp can be transferred. Is this correct. I’m not ready to register a custom domain yet as I’m still thinking about the name.

“Free domain” as in “yourdomain.wordpress.com”? That can’t be transferred anywhere since it is a subdomain of wordpress.com.
If you mean the content on said subdomain, then, yes, that can be exported and imported to a new standalone install of the WordPress software.
If you purchase a domain name, as in “yourdomain.com”, from WordPress.com (which is indeed a paid upgrade) then you can transfer it to another domain registrar after the ICANN required 60 days waiting period. http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/transfer-domain-registration/
