Is my domain name taken?

    I cancelled my bluehost subscription yesterday and I had a live chat with the support team who told me my domain will be free for anyone else to use if I cancelled. He told me to try to register it on wordpress.com in a few hours. So I waited and now I want to buy a premium plan on wordpress but my domain seems to be taken? I won’t buy premium if I cannot use that domain name. But the guy on bluehost told me it would be free to use. Can someone clarify?

    What is the domain? It sounds like the person you spoke to at Bluehost gave you some inaccurate information.

    Cancelled domains are not released immediately, and it can take anything from a few days to over a year before a cancelled domain becomes available again, if at all. You should never cancel a domain that you still want to use, as there’s no guarantee that you’ll be able to use it again somewhere else in future.

    At the very least it will take a few days, because even if Bluehost cancelled it with the registry right away, the registry will not release the domain immediately, and that is not a process Bluehost has any control over.
