Is this a valid email from WordPress.com?

  • Unknown's avatar

Recently my company received the following email, and we’re wondering if it’s a legitimate notification from WordPress.com, or a scam.

LA Translations was our old company name, and Lise Alain is company president. The message uses her old email address, but we have no record of having an account with the specified username on WordPress.com. Hence, we’re a bit suspicious. Can you please confirm if this is a valid email?

    Hello,
Recently a group of hackers released the email addresses and passwords of over 160 million LinkedIn accounts, and as the email address associated with your WordPress.com account was on this list, we have reset your password as a precaution to protect your identity and keep your site(s) safe.
To reset your password and regain access to your account and blog, please follow these steps:
    1. Go to WordPress.com
    2. Click the ‘Login’ button on the homepage
    3. Click on the link ‘Lost your password?’
    4. Enter your WordPress.com username: latranslations
    5. Click the ‘Get New Password’ button
It is very important that your password be unique. Using the same password on different web sites increases the risk of your account being hacked. Now would be a good time to go through all of your online services and set distinct, strong passwords for each.
Once you’re logged in, please consider making your account even more secure by enabling two-step authentication. To do so, from the WordPress.com home page, click on your avatar at the top right of your screen and click the ‘Security’ link from the menu on the left of your profile page. Next, click on the ‘Two-Step Authentication’ link at the top of the security page and follow the instructions.
If you have trouble resetting your password, please reply to this message to get help from our support team. We will never ask you to supply your account password or financial information via email.

  • Hi there,

Yes, Linkedin did have a data leak and forced reset passwords of many of their users. So yes, it is a legitimate email that we are currently sending out to our users.

Let me know if you have any questions.

    Thanks!
