Issue gaining Administrator permission

    Hello to whoever can help!

I’m relatively new to WordPress so please any advice would be greatly appreciated! A family friend asked me to update and maintain his site. Everything was going fine for a while until he asked me to update the site recently. When returning to the site I realized my dashboard didn’t have access to Users, Appearance, etc… I’ve tried to figure a way around this but can’t seem to find how to change the User permission through Dashboard. I’ve added a new user to phpMyAdmin, but again that only gives me basic permission.

Also, the site recently received a message from GoDaddy who hosts the site saying “We are writing to inform you of a security incident impacting your GoDaddy Managed WordPress hosting service.” It then said it “we have reset your WordPress Admin login credentials, sFTP password, and your database password. Your website is still up and running, but you won’t be able to edit content until you reset your passwords.” Second, we have reset your WordPress Admin login credentials, sFTP password, and your database password. Your website is still up and running, but you won’t be able to edit content until you reset your passwords. So I’ve updated all of those but still have not changed the user’s administrators role.

The original site builder was from somewhere else and I have no way of contacting him. Please any advice to fix this would be greatly appreciated!

    Hope all is well!

  • Hello, I’m sorry to hear that you are having trouble with your website. However, your site is not hosted with WordPress.com. It is a site using the open-source WordPress software (from WordPress.org) but hosted with GoDaddy.

Because WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two entirely separate entities, we cannot access files or data for sites that are hosted elsewhere, so WordPress.com staff can only assist with sites that are hosted on our servers. You can find more information here about the differences between WordPress.org software and WordPress.com: https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/

No sites at WordPress.com have been compromised by way of the incident GoDaddy is reporting.

https://wordpress.org/support/ is a great resource for sites using the open source WordPress.org software, and you can find support for that at: https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

With that said though, I recommend contacting GoDaddy about this: https://www.godaddy.com/help
