Issue with wordpress.com login passkey – showing wrong option
-
I have a security key set up via Touch ID on my MacBook Pro for my wordpress.com account login, but the login prompt shows a QR code for iPhone instead, and selecting “Use a different passkey” doesn’t resolve it — it still shows the QR code…

I figured I’ll give some feedback on the confusing BELL ICON on this page. It’s showing a crossed out icon, which makes me think that the status is “unsubscribed from updates” and to subscribe I have to click it to toggle it. Definitely seems backwards and is confusing.

Seriously 3 weeks and not even a single reply to this critical login security bug? that is frustrating. A bug like this shouldn’t even exist in the first place. What’s happening over there? anyone home?
I deleted the macbook fingerprint passkey and set one up using my phone camera on QR code. tested it and it does not work either. This is sad.

Hi there,
I see you have been waiting a while for an answer. That is definitely frustrating when you are locked out of your account. I am a volunteer here on the forums, but let me help you figure this out.
This loop usually happens because of a communication glitch between Google Chrome and your macOS. When Chrome loses track of the local key file, it gets stuck and forces the iPhone QR code on you.
To fix this, look for a link on the login page that says “Try another way” or “Use password” so you can get into your account first. Once you are in, go to
chrome://settings/passkeysin your browser and delete any old wordpress.com keys. After that, go to your WordPress.com account settings, delete the broken passkey, and create a new one. Make sure to choose the option to save it to your iCloud Keychain so your Mac handles the Touch ID directly. If Chrome still gives you trouble, try logging in with Safari once to see if that works better.
You may follow the detailed guidelines here: https://wordpress.com/support/security/two-step-authentication/security-key-authentication/
Let me know if you can get back in using your password.
