I've been asked to improve this website (please help)

I’ve been tasked with modernizing and improving this website:
It was made with the classic editor and it has a plugin that makes the classic editor still the default, meaning maybe some of this is just incompatibility issues? I’m very new to WP, so I’m not sure.
I’ve noticed that I can’t really create interesting layouts or find a new theme compatible with the existing content because all the page content (right now mostly text) is super condensed/small-width.
I think the theme (Twenty-Fourteen), which has a ‘site’ max width of 1260px, is causing the column of ‘blank space’ (the repeating picture of flowers) on the right, but beyond that, even when I preview other themes, the text itself on the pages is always in those super compact paragraphs. I’ve tried changing page preferences to the ‘full-screen’ template, I’ve tried making new pages with the block editor, and I’ve tried some CSS that was supposed to edit content width (it only changed the margins). I’m not sure what else could be happening.
Also, I am interested in editing the theme to make the whole site a bit wider too, but I’ve heard that makes compatibility with mobile and other computers worse?
I’m open to any tips on how to make this website look more modern and clean without complex changes. I personally felt like making the content wider would be a good place to start, but feel free to let me know if you think there’s something better I could do!
