I’ve had this blog for years… now all of a sudden there are ads? The aesthetic compromise makes me want to shut it down immediately. How/why did this suddenly happen?

WordPress.com has been running ads on our free sites since 2006 but usually if you aren’t logged in and probably coming in through a search engine result. It is mentioned in the TOS you agreed to when you signed up and you can removed entirely with the annually renewable no-ads upgrade.
Every ad on your site put up by WordPress.com has a pointer to this page http://en.wordpress.com/about-these-ads/
FWIW, I do not see any ads on your site, so I am not certain what ads you are referring to. If you do not see next to the ad the link to the above page, then you may have malware or a malicious browser extension creating those ads. You’ll want to read this earlier forum thread with suggestions https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/word-ads-will-not-turn-off?replies=10#post-1100529

Definitely no malware on my system. The ads were there plain and clear (yes i did follow the ‘about these ads’ link’). I’ve gone back in since I first saw them and they are no longer visible. Interesting. I would assume that I’d be subject to ads with a free site (fair enough), but I’ve been promoting my blog based on its initial appearance and for it to change all of a sudden, albeit only seemingly and momentarily, that would have been a concern for me. False alarm I guess, only an hour ago I saw ads… now I’m ad free again!

You’re not really entirely “ad free” until you purchase the “No Ads” upgrade. IMHO, if you are a professional or business site, the current $30/year is worth it. http://en.support.wordpress.com/no-ads/

I understand that I’d need to pay for such features. If the blog were as powerful a medium as Facebook has proven to be with regards to marketing, I would absolutely subscribe to it ($30 is nothing). My WordPress blog is strictly supplemental in nature and has taken on a much more personal meaning to me, as only my family really follows me through it.
