Jetpack stats question regarding specific referrer pages
-
I have a free plan. My downloads show that people are clicking on outdated links to download PDFs from my site so they get a “404 – file not found” error. I have about a dozen wordpress.com sites (I write science fiction stories) and I have checked again and again that all the links to the PDFs on my sites are valid. Although all my sites have their own URLs, I host all the PDFs on rickbatemanlinks.wordpress.com
My question is, would the Premium version of Jetpack stats show the specific page the broken links are coming from rather than just the top level domain name? I have searched and cannot find an answer to this question. I am retired, on a fixed income and really have to watch the pennies, so I don’t want to “just try it and see”.
Thanks in advance.

Hey,
Apologies for the missing body of your recent forum request! This was a temporary issue that we managed to fix yesterday.Regarding the Jetpack stats, these will give you more details about your stats in general and you can read more about it here:
Jetpack Stats provides data, graphs, and charts to show you how many visits your site gets, which posts and pages are the most popular, and much more. This guide explains how to read and understand your site’s stats and insights. Video Overview Access Your Stats To access your website or blog’s stats page, take the following steps: Visit your site’s dashboard. Navigate to SHowever, I can see the 404s are caused by the following file. While this was deleted 4 months ago, if the link was present on the site until recently, it’s expected for this to be present on the stats for a longer while until they go away as some folks interacted with it and perhaps they want to access that file again. An easy way to go around this would letting your website subscribers that you’ve recently updated the download file to a new URL so they should get that one instead.
I hope this helps!

Hi there @blackcotton25,
Thanks for reaching out! I understand how discouraging it can feel to see a drop in referrals — especially when you’ve been putting in the effort to grow your site.
Just to clarify, are you referring to traffic that used to come from the WordPress.com Reader or from another source? Could you please share the site URL to take a closer look?
In the meantime, you can check this guide: Understand Your Traffic SourcesLooking forward to your reply!

Hey, thanks, and it could very well be just me but it pays to be sure.

Hey @blackcotton25!
Thanks for reaching out. I took a look and everything does seem in order with your stats — sometimes traffic sources, like referrals from WordPress.com, can fluctuate naturally depending on how often you’re posting, which tags you’re using, and engagement in the Reader. See this guide for reference: Analyze Your Content’s Performance
I also noticed your site is on the Free plan and doesn’t yet have a custom domain connected. Using your custom domain (which I see is already in your account) can help give your site a more professional presence and may improve its visibility across WordPress.com and beyond.
You can follow the steps in this guide to attach to your site: Attach a Domain to a WebsiteIf you’re aiming to grow your traffic further, here are a couple of tips that might help:
- Post regularly and use relevant tags (5–15 is the sweet spot).
- Engage with other sites through comments or the Reader.
- Consider upgrading for access to more advanced tools like SEO and monetization.

Thanks and I just realized that I had put my Reader in subscribers mode instead of discovery mode so they may have only went out to my 21 subscribers which, in fact, actually awesome. Thanks again.

Great catch! It sounds like switching from Subscribers mode to Discovery cleared things up. Glad that’s all sorted.
