Keeping my domain name from Squarespace
-
I would like to start a blog on WordPress. I already have the domain name I want through my subscription at Squarespace. (I was using that subscription for a website for a small business that I am going to close). I want the blog to use the domain name I already have at Squarespace. It that possible to keep it and use it with WordPress once I cancel my subscription with Squarespace?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
You should be able to use your Squarespace domain here, yes. It’s not possible to transfer it to us, so you’ll need to leave the domain registered with them or transfer it to another domain registrar like Namecheap. Then you can use the domain mapping upgrade to connect the domain to your WordPress.com site. You will also need to buy a plan from My Site ->Plans in order to add the domain mapping upgrade:

Thank you for the response. I checked out the link. Would it work for me to use the Personal plan or would I have to go to Premium to be able to connect to the domain I already have?

You can use the Presonal Plan to connect the domain. Just make sure you buy the plan first, before you try to add the domain, otherwise Premium is added by default.

Are forwarding the domain and transferring the domain the same thing? I am looking into the instructions that Squarespace sent me for forwarding the domain once I cancel my subscription with them. I know you said I couldn’t transfer but would have to use the domain mapping upgrade to connect my domain to the WordPress site, and I didn’t know if transferring and forwarding were the same.
Here are their instructions for forwarding if it helps:
Forward to a non-Squarespace site
To forward a domain or subdomain outside of Squarespace, use the presets in your Advanced DNS settings.
Open Advanced DNS settings for the domain you’d like to forward. In this example, we’re using the domain “createbeautifulwebsite.org.”
In the Website Defaults section, delete your default records. Your domain can’t forward to another site when these defaults are in place. You can always add them again if you need them later.
From the Add Presets drop-down menu, select Forward Domain.
In the URL field, add the full URL of the domain or specific page to forward to, and then click Add.
Note: The screenshot below uses “www.squarespace.com” as an example, but you should use the domain you’re forwarding to.
In a new private or incognito window, enter your domain’s URL. If your records are correct, you’ll be directed to the new site and that site’s URL will appear in the browser address bar.

Forwarding and transferring are not the same, but neither are forwarding and mapping. You want mapping, not forwarding :)
Transferring means your domain registration actually moves over to us, so you pay us to renew the domain each year instead of Squarespace. But that’s not currently possible with us.
Forwarding means they just send traffic from your domain on to a different site, but it won’t make your WordPress.com site appear at the domain itself.
Mapping connects the domain to our servers, like it’s currently connected to Squarespace’s servers. You do that by changing the domain’s name servers on Squarespace’s end, in the Advanced DNS section.
You can see the bottom of this Squarespace support page:
https://support.squarespace.com/hc/en-us/articles/205812348-Advanced-DNS-settings
Change the name servers on the domain to the following:
NS1.WORDPRESS.COM
NS2.WORDPRESS.COM
NS3.WORDPRESS.COM
Once you do that, your domain should be showing your WordPress.com in a few hours, provided you already have the domain mapping upgrade added on this end.
