Lapsed blog site
-
My friend and I had a blog site set up in 2014 via a now dissolved web design company. We were therefore not made aware that our blogsite had ‘lapsed’ and is now no longer recognised. The issue is that the content, two years worth of ‘memoirs’ was not backed up (by either of us!) and we would like to understand if it is in any way possible to retrieve the blog site and content.

The address of the site would help. Was it hosted here at WordPress.com or somewhere else?

Many thanks for prompt reply. What I can tell you is that the blog was set up by Blighty Web Design in 2014 (now dissolved) and my understanding hosted by wordpress. The blog site was ukpoliceinafrica.co.uk.

ukpoliceinafrica.co.uk doesn’t appear to have ever been a WordPress.com site, I’m afraid. It looks like it was a site that used the WordPress open-source software (from WordPRess.org), but that was hosted elsewhere.

Thank you. I dont really have an understanding how it works. Is there a way of finding out where it was hosted or will I need to track down the originator of the blog? And huge thanks for being so helpful.

I’m afraid we have no way of telling where that domain used to be registered or hosted. Someone would have needed to pay for both the domain and a hosting account, so if you can track down the payment records or receipts for those payments, it will show you who the hosting provider was.
If you created the site through a design agency they would likely have taken care of those details on your behalf, so in that case they’re the only people who’d be able to help you. Chances are your site’s files have long since been removed from the hosting provider’s servers when the hosting plan expired, in which case there will be no way to get the site back.
The only information I can see about that domain is that it’s currently registered with http://www.openprovider.com, it’s been registered there since September 2018, and the domain is currently suspended – that information can be found in the public Whois database:
There is one option:
There’s a site, called the Wayback Machine, that aims to keep an archive of all sites created on the web. They periodically take snapshots of websites to preserve the sites how they looked at a specific moment in time.
I had a look at your site is on there, so you might be able to recover at least some of your content from there:

Once again, massive thanks for the advice. I opened the link you sent and even being able to see some of my posts again is just awesome. I will take a better look and try to contact the originator of the site. Very grateful for all the advice.
