How can I recover ownership of a domain name? I missed the emails telling me that my automatic payment couldn’t go through because of changed dates on my card.

littlegoatbooks.com expired on 3rd February 2018. Unfortunately, we no longer control the domain and cannot renew it for you.
It was possible to recover the domain for some weeks after its expiration but due to the length of time that has passed, this is no longer possible. This support document describes the expiration process in more detail, if you are interested:
If a domain is not redeemed by the original registrant and not purchased at auction, it is usually returned to the pool of available domain names and can be registered on a first-come, first-served basis.
A WHOIS lookup shows this domain has since been registered through Chengdu west:
https://whois.icann.org/en/lookup?name=littlegoatbooks.com
If you didn’t register the domain there, it means the domain is now owned by someone else.
