latest post block
-
This is so frustrating! I’m trying to add the Latest Post Block (really any block). I’ve been told in the wordpress help to go to
https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/latest-posts-block/
Fine. But where do I find this when I’m on my page?! I can’t find it!It’s not here….Wait. Why can’t I add JPG images to this support forum? That would make things so much easier in describing where I’m looking!
So, I can’t find it in the left sidebar that has My Home. And I can’t find it in the right sidebar under Manage Your Site. Where the hell is it?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
My Home is the dashboard for your entire site. Blocks are added inside of specific posts and pages, so you need to create or edit a post or page in order to add a new block to it.
Go to My Site ->Site ->Pages and edit the page where you want to add that block.
In the editor, click the + button and search for that block, or just type
/lateston a new line and selec thte block there. The support page you linked to above explains this under the https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/latest-posts-block/#add-a-latest-posts-block section, and that links to the editor overview support page that explains how to add blocks in more detail:

Thanks for the help.
I’m not 100% sure where you are directing me to. Boy, a JPG image sure would help! Are you saying go to the ‘page’ where I see ‘My Site’ and then site name lifeofamkeshutin.wordpress.com. and then in the left margin where I see ‘My Home, Stats, Plan’ etc. to click on ‘Site’ and then to click on ‘Pages’ and to add the Block there?
Well, I clicked on ‘Blog’ and it opened a previously unseen view of my ‘unpublished’ blog that I’ve imported. WTF! And now I can’t get back! to ‘My Site.’ (By the way, I now see a ‘+’ button for adding blocks.)
During my setup process I’ve been working w/ an unpublished imported blog, and viewing this from ‘My Site’ by clicking on ‘View Site.’ When I do this I see something resembling the ‘Theme’ I’m currently toying with using. I’m then adding various widgets, etc. to get a feel how this theme will work. Now, after you’ve directed me to add things by going into ‘Pages’ I see something called ‘Blog’, but it is not in the form of the Theme I chose. And it is now wanting me to publish stuff? Have I inadvertently made the unpublished site public? WTF! Can I go back?
-
I’m now stuck on a this ‘Home’ page (I’m assuming for my site?) with no way to get back. I don’t even see a logout button. What have I done? The top tab in the browser says this is an ‘W Edit Page < Life of a Milwaukee Shut-In — WordPress.com’ so that’s something.
Well, the only way I found to return to the ‘My Site’ ‘My Home’ page was to use the back arrow in the browser. It appears the site is still in the draft stage, but who actually knows.
I’ve had enough of this for now.

Blocks are content that you add to posts or pages.
So, yes you were correct at “and then in the left margin where I see ‘My Home, Stats, Plan’ etc. to click on ‘Site’ and then to click on ‘Pages’ and to add the Block there?” but then you need to edit or add a new page, then you add blocks to that.
On the editing page, clicking the W at the top-right returns you to the listing.

Thanks for the help. This is a lot more complicated than Blogger. I could see some people being turned off by this.
So it sounds like what I’m hearing is that there are multiple pages on a site. A Home-Home page, a Blog-Home page, other Home pages, etc. The support page for this doesn’t go into much detail as to why you’d want to add multiple pages, or how this might look. https://wordpress.com/support/pages/ I also see the phrase ‘page parents’ used in the support, which gives me pause. So would a ‘Page’ be something like what I see now in the upper right of this WordPress screen, with ‘Themes Support Forums Blog Features’ with each being a different ‘Page’? Often on websites/blogs you’ll find along the top banner a series of words like ‘Home Blog About …’ I’m assuming each of these would require a different ‘Page’?
One big question I have is why, when I went into Pages and saw a Blog-Home Page, it didn’t look anything like the theme I had chosen? It was just a white screen not too much different than this. Was that because I was in some kind of Edit mode?
Currently my site hasn’t been ‘launched’. So, if I go into this Page editor, make changes say to Blocks, then update, will changes be made without launching my site? Or do I have to launch the site first before I begin monkeying around with Pages and blocks?

Hi there,
One big question I have is why, when I went into Pages and saw a Blog-Home Page, it didn’t look anything like the theme I had chosen?
That’s because it’s up to you to design that page and every page as a matter of fact. The demo of that theme is set up in such a way to showcase the potentials of that theme.
Currently my site hasn’t been ‘launched’. So, if I go into this Page editor, make changes say to Blocks, then update, will changes be made without launching my site?
Yes, that’s correct. You can work on your site and launch it only when you’re ready.
Please have a read at the guide we linked above (https://wordpress.com/learn/) as it will help you understand how each and every part of WordPress.com is working.

Thanks for all the help. I really do appreciate it.
A couple of quick observations:
1) My questions are stemming from the fact that blogging and web design are different topics. Not everyone wants to be a web designer. It appears, however, that to be a blogger on wordpress you also need to be a web designer, in all of its minutiae.
2) Navigation on the wordpress site is not self evident. You need to know the tricks.
3) Why are JPGs not allowed on these support forums? This I find utterly bizarre.
4) Sidebars are a big, big feature of wordpress. On the left, right, within another sidebar. Having more than one sidebar in more than one location is confusing.
5) Lots of text and very little videos on your site. I’ve looked at some of the videos on the link (https://wordpress.com/learn/). They are really specific, go really fast, and use a computer voice. Could you direct me to one video/tutorial by a human that goes through step-by-step how to get your website/blog up and running on wordpress, describing all the features, navigation, etc.?
Thanks

You can just stick to one Classic Block if you want to only write: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/classic-block/
Navigation on the wordpress site is not self evident.
Would you mind elaborating on that? Which navigation flow specifically?
Why are JPGs not allowed on these support forums?
We don’t have a way to facilitate uploads in this forum software currently. But, if you upload an image to your site’s media library, we can see it there.
Sidebars are a big, big feature of wordpress.
Sidebar usage is theme-specific. You can narrow down theme choices by how many sidebars they have and where they’re located at https://wordpress.com/themes
They are really specific, go really fast, and use a computer voice.
This is what we have for now, but thanks for the feedback!

Thanks for the tip on using Classic Block. This will be something I will investigate further when I get the time and energy.
About navigation. If you read this thread from the beginning you’ll see that when I first went into editing Pages I got trapped and couldn’t discern a way to get back to My Site home page. There was no ‘Home’ button, nor were there any back arrows in the upper left. It’s since been pointed out to me that clicking on the ‘W’ logo in the upper left will return you. I’ve also learned in one of the above videos that when you click on the ‘X’ in the upper right of a page that page will close and you’ll be returned to a page existing behind the page you’re on. It’s possible that this option was available when I got trapped, but didn’t recognize it as a way out. Normally clicking on an ‘X’ in the upper right of a screen closes everything, and I didn’t want to do that.

Well, I went into the Blog Page and added a Latest Posts block. The result is not what I expected at all for clicking on show in chronological order! All blog posts are still in reverse chronological order. The only thing that happened is that the first 5 blog post titles appeared as lines within this mountain image that appears on the top of my blog home page.
How do I change the order of my blog posts if not with Latest Posts block?
-
I’m no expert but it appears that the Latest Post block has simply added a block to my blog that is very similar to the Recent Posts or Archives that already exist. This only appears on the first blog page, though, and is absent as I scroll thru other months. In any event, this additional block doesn’t appear to be what I want.
I’ve found this article on your site (https://wordpress.com/support/show-your-posts-in-chronological-order/). Skipping the Latest Posts Block section, I’d like to try using the Add a String to Your URLs section. But I’m not sure how to change URL addresses. Do I do this under My Sites>Manage>Domains, and then change the domain name I’ve chosen?
An alternate method would be to use a plug-in. I did a search online and this plug-in popped up (https://wordpress.org/plugins/chronological-posts/#description). However, when I searched for this (or any other one like it) in My Site>Tools>Plug-ins nothing appeared. What am I missing?
Thanks

How do I change the order of my blog posts if not with Latest Posts block?
By default the latest posts block will still show your most recent posts first.
You need to change a setting in that block to switch it around to show oldest posts first:
https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/latest-posts-block/#sorting-and-filtering
I’m no expert but it appears that the Latest Post block has simply added a block to my blog that is very similar to the Recent Posts or Archives that already exist.
That is the purpose of this block, yes: it adds your blog feed inside of a static page. However, unlike your regular posts feed, you can customize what appears inside the latest posts block, e.g. changing the order, or only displaying posts from specific categories.
Skipping the Latest Posts Block section, I’d like to try using the Add a String to Your URLs section. But I’m not sure how to change URL addresses. Do I do this under My Sites>Manage>Domains, and then change the domain name I’ve chosen?
To do this, you need to create a custom menu, and to that menu add the custom URL that includes the
?order=asctext. Then delete the link for the actual posts feed from the menu. That way, if someone clicks on your custom link, they’ll see the chronological version of the posts feed instead. An alternate method would be to use a plug-in. I did a search online and this plug-in popped up (https://wordpress.org/plugins/chronological-posts/#description). However, when I searched for this (or any other one like it) in My Site>Tools>Plug-ins nothing appeared. What am I missing?
Plugins are add-on programs you install on a WordPress site to add extra functionality. You won’t find any plugins at My Site ->Tools ->Plugins, as that’s where you go to install a plugin. In order to install a plugin on a WordPress.com site, you need our Business Plan.

This bit of advice sounds exactly like what I want to try:
“To do this, you need to create a custom menu, and to that menu add the custom URL that includes the ?order=asc text. Then delete the link for the actual posts feed from the menu. That way, if someone clicks on your custom link, they’ll see the chronological version of the posts feed instead.”But I’m not 100% sure what I’m doing. I’m not a web designer. It’s so frustrating to be told in 3 lines what to do. Even in your article (https://wordpress.com/support/show-your-posts-in-chronological-order/) this is explained in just 1 line:
“5. Optional: create a custom menu with a link to the URL you created.”Without the ability to show in video or pictures what to do I’m not sure this is going to work. I’ve got a masters in engineering, so you wouldn’t think this would be a problem. Everyone talks about how great WordPress is. Maybe it is. But getting help on answering specific questions about your site is problematic to say the least.
-
First, you’ll need to select the page titled Blog as your blog page: https://wordpress.com/support/pages/front-page/#3-create-a-blog-page-optional
Next, for creating a menu with custom links, first follow this site: https://wordpress.com/support/menus/
And, for the URL of the custom link, use:

Thanks for the help.
So, on the site I already have a Home and Blog page, with a bunch of blog posts already existing from Blogger.
From the My Site opening page I click on the left menu item Customize and get new screen. (Note that I can also get here, to the same place, by clicking on a right menu item Edit Menus; I assume this is just duplication.)
Now I see my Home page. Along the top are listed my two existing pages, Home and Blog, each with a pencil next to them that says “click to edit this menu” (I assume this is just a graphical way of indicating items that are available in the new left menu). Along the left is a new menu with an item Menus. If I click on Menus a new left menu opens. Two items of note are Primary and Create New Menu.
From here I have the problem. I see (at least) two options.
Option 1
If I click on Primary. I can then either click on Blog and a number of boxes open, one of which is Link Relationship XFN. All of these boxes are currently empty except for Navigation Label, which reads Blog. There is also the Add Items button, which opens a new menu that has a Custom Links box (I’m guessing this is where the custom URL goes).Option 2
Under Menus, rather than click on Primary, I can click on Create New Menu and start to go down a different path that is basically identical to Option 1, but in a new menu.So earlier advice mentioned “create custom menu”, but I’m not sure if this means create a Blog page (with menu, which was already done when I uploaded from Blogger) and modify that, or does it mean to create a new menu on top of what I already have.
Also, earlier advice said I should then “delete the link for the actual posts feed from the menu.” That’s easier said than done, at least for me. I’m really not sure what this entails.
I hope this makes sense.
-
These steps for changing the menu are for the menu at the top. It says “Home Blog” right now.
You’re correct, there are multiple ways to get there, and you can either edit the existing menu, add a custom link, call it what you want and use the =asc link we sent earlier. Or, you can make a whole new menu if that’s easier.
Totally up to you, but it does feel like you’e got a handle on this.
Do you need more help?
-
Sorry to say but I still do.
From the Customizing > Menus > Primary
I clicked on Add Items and added to Custom Links https://lifeofamkeshutin.wordpress.com/blog/?order=asc with a Link Text of “Chrono.” After saving there was now on top Home, Blog, Chrono, non of which showed posts in chronological order. Blog and Chrono were identical.
I then removed the existing Blog. After saving there was now just Home, Chrono, non of which were in chronological order.
I then changed label of Chrono to Blog, saved, but still the same.
-
To clarify, this trick will only work if you are using the built in “blog page template” for your theme. In the case of your current page I see you are using the “Blog Posts Block” which does not have the option to reverse the chronology.
To get a blog page that displays reverse order, you can activate the built in “blog page template” here, under the Homepage Settings tab on the left:
https://wordpress.com/customize/lifeofamkeshutin.wordpress.comThis is difficult to explain in words, so I recorded a quick video to show you how to set that. You can view it at this link: https://d.pr/v/DlZZEZ
-
Thanks, Jerry. That did it. As I’ve said above, this is still all new to me, and a lot more complex than Blogger.
I’m still toying with themes, and messing around with the calendar widget. It’s interesting that now posts on the blog page appear chronologically, which is what I was looking for, yet when you click on a specific calendar month posts are still reverse chronological. Do you know if this can be manipulated as well? I’m guessing that cause it’s a widget settings are locked in and can’t be altered.
