Latex does not compile at all

I follow exactly the instructions – custom HTML block, enter
$ latex 2 pi $
as well as other examples people have posted and say work.
But it does not turn it into latex when previewed or published. Can’t find anything exactly like this online. I’m using wordpress.com editor but I haven’t done anything special like install plugins – that’s just for the desktop version, right? Other HTML does compile -
What site are you talking about, a site running on the wordpress.com platform or a site using the open source wordpress.org?

Got it – needed to omit the space between $ and latex, contrary to the examples I saw. Hope this helps someone in the same situation!
