launching my MAMP to live wordpress.com $99 site
-
Hi,
I purchased a WordPress.com site (pixelthewonderdog.com) for $99. I threw something together before I realized I was in way over my head. I stopped and went to Lynda.com and watched the tutorials on WordPress using MAMP. I got MAMP, installed it, and went along with the Lynda.com videos. In my sample (MAMP) site (locally hosted on my computer) I have a lot of stuff I would like to integrate into my online (WordPress.com) site. I have copied my online content successfully into my MAMP site so I have everything (before and after watching Lynda.com) in one place, but I can’t figure out how to now take it all and launch it to the web overwriting the existing online site. Everything I can find shows moving content folders, etc. then changing code which I think I can follow along with, but I have no clue where to find that stuff in wordpress.com.
Can you help? The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi Christine,
I see you’ve submitted a few support questions in the past couple days, so I’m going to do my best to answer each of your questions here. If I miss something, please let me know!
First, your question about your MAMP site:
I have copied my online content successfully into my MAMP site so I have everything (before and after watching Lynda.com) in one place, but I can’t figure out how to now take it all and launch it to the web overwriting the existing online site.
Unfortunately, the tutorials you saw about using MAMP are related to setting up a self-hosted WordPress site using the free software from WordPress.org. That’s different from sites hosted here at WordPress.com, so there isn’t a way to upload an entire site developed with MAMP to your site here. You can read a bit more about the differences here: WordPress.com and WordPress.org
However, all is not lost! You can Export any content from your MAMP site and then Import it here at WordPress.com. Then, you’ll just need to set up the appearance of the site the way you want it, using one of the themes available here at WordPress.com.
Since WordPress states that I can cancel within 30 days, can I instead switch over the “Premium” package to ChristineWinscott.com and leave the pixelthewonderdog.com as the free one? And, can I do this without loosing all my work?
You are welcome to transfer your Premium plan to another site you own. I can transfer the Premium plan to your other site for you, or you can transfer it yourself. We have more about that here: My Upgrades: Transferring Upgrades
However, before I make any changes, I’d like to answer one of your other questions:
But now that it’s getting put together as a website I realize
that people need to be able to find it using “christinewinscott.com” not ”
pixelthewonderdog.com”.So, now that you’ve changed it I will be able to type in ”
christinewinscott.com and my content from the (formerly called) ”
pixelthewonderdog.com” will be in it?Right now, you have two, completely separate sites. One is your site at christinewinscott.com (linked to the free WordPress.com address christinewinscott.wordpress.com). You can see that site here: http://christinewinscott.com/
The other site is pixelthewonderdog.com (link to the free WordPress.com address cwinscott.wordpress.com, and also the custom domain winscottstudios.com). You can see that site here: http://pixelthewonderdog.com/
The primary domain is the domain that visitors see in the browser’s address bar when they visit a specific site. However, changing the primary domain on one site won’t affect the other site.
If you’d like, I can just transfer your domain christinewinscott.com to your other site. That way, when people visit christinewinscott.com they will see your other site instead of the one it’s linked to now. If I do that, you wouldn’t have to change anything else (so you won’t need to move your Premium plan at all). Please let me know if you’d like me to do this for you. :)
I purchased Domain Mapping for “asyouwishfineart.com” and then realized that I did not want to change it over to WordPress, I just wanted to link to it from my (“christinewinscott.com” or “pixelthewonderdog.com”) site on WordPress. If I do nothing on the Weebly end to change anything (Weebly is where “asyouwishfineart.com” lives), will it stay with Weebly and not cause any problems down the road?
As long as you don’t change any settings on the domain itself, domain mapping upgrades won’t change how your domain works. I went ahead and cancelled that domain mapping and sent you a refund for that purchase, since you don’t want to use it.
I know that’s a lot of information, so please let me know if you have any questions about it!

Hi,
If you could change the premium plan and the primary domain to christinewinscott.com (just like you offered above), that would be great !One last question (well, maybe not the last) …
Can I use plugins that I found on WordPress.org in the WordPress.com site? Also, (see, I knew there would be more), can I link it to my Etsy store to sell my stuff? And, can I link it to content on my free WordPress site?
-
Hi Christine,
Okay, I moved your domain christinewinscott.com to your site that has WordPress.com Premium, and I made that the primary domain on the site. Take a look and let me know if anything looks out of place! :)
Can I use plugins that I found on WordPress.org in the WordPress.com site?
No, plugins can’t be installed here at WordPress.com, for security reasons. However, WordPress.com has a lot of built-in features that were inspired by plugins! If there’s a particular feature you’re looking for, you can search for it on our support site:
Or let me know and I can help you see if it’s available here at WordPress.com.
can I link it to my Etsy store to sell my stuff?
You’re welcome to create links to any sites you’d like. You can either create Links on the pages of your site, or you can set up a Custom Menu and create custom links in the menu to other sites like your Etsy store.
And, can I link it to content on my free WordPress site?
Can you describe what that kind of link would look like? You’re welcome to create links like I described above, or even Image Links (so an image on your site here would link to your Etsy store). Is that what you mean?
-
Hi,
Thank you SO much!
By the link I meant is the same kind. You have been wonderful at explaining everything!
Thank you! 😊

Hi,
I think after reading up on the limitations of using WordPress.com I’d like to switch over to the self hosting way. I see that Godaddy is affiliated with WordPress. Can I use them, then move my WordPress.com site over to it? I would like to be able to take advantage of the plug in options from WordPress.org. If this is possible, how do I go about doing it?
Thanks!
Christine

Hi Christine,
Sure thing. You can move to a self-hosted WordPress site with GoDaddy using this guide: Moving a Blog
If you’d like help with that move, we also offer a Guided Transfer service that you can learn more about here: Guided Transfer
Once you’re set up with a self-hosted site, you’ll have the plugins option in your site’s dashboard. You can learn more about self-hosted WordPress sites on WordPress.org:
If you have questions about using the WordPress.org software on a self-hosted site, the Guided Transfer service comes with two weeks of direct support from our Guided Transfer team. You can also get help with self-hosted WordPress sites in the WordPress.org support forums here:
Please let me know if you have any other questions about that. :)
-
Thanks so much!
Before I look into the GoDaddy thing I do have one question… Why is my site so slow to move around in? Is it something I’m doing wrong?
-
Hi Christine,
Is there a particular page on your site that loads slowly for you? Or is it the whole site? Do other sites like the Illustratr demo site also load slowly for you?
-
Hi,
It’s my whole site that is slow. I don’t know how to find another site that uses the same theme to find out if it’s the theme or not.
Will I still be able to ask you questions when I switch to GoDaddy? Thanks, :)
Christine
-
Hi Christine,
You can check to see if it’s the theme by opening the Illustratr demo site: http://illustratrdemo.wordpress.com/
Please let me know if that’s the same for you or if it loads faster than your site.
Will I still be able to ask you questions when I switch to GoDaddy?
The support staff here at WordPress.com only has the tools to help with sites hosted here. If you decide to get a Guided Transfer, that includes 2 weeks of direct support from our transfer team to get you started with your new site. However, help with self-hosted WordPress sites is mainly available from the WordPress.org support forums here:
-
It doesn’t seem to be the theme. I think I must have done something.
Hi,
Do you know how to make the first page that opens (the home page?) a “page” instead of a “post”? I cannot seem to make the same kind of changes to it.
What I would like to do is have the 3 buttons I made with the titles underneath them centered across the page, all on one line. Is that possible?
I found that I can center images across if I use a textcenter in the code but how do I center images with titles attached?
Also, how long do I have until my 30 days are up to decide if I want WordPress to host my site before I change to GoDaddy?
Thank you SO much!
Christine

Hi Christine,
I did some testing and I think there may be an issue with the custom fonts on your site that’s causing the slow loading you see. I’ve asked our team to look into that so we can get those custom fonts working properly, and I’ll let you know as soon as I have an update about that.
Do you know how to make the first page that opens (the home page?) a “page” instead of a “post”? I cannot seem to make the same kind of changes to it.
Sure thing! You can change that in your site’s Customizer. To open the Customizer, go to your My Sites page and click the “Customize” link under your site.
Then, go to the “Front” section and under “Front page displays” choose “A static page.” Then, you’ll be able to choose what page to show on your site’s front/home page.
We also have a guide for that here: Front Page
What I would like to do is have the 3 buttons I made with the titles underneath them centered across the page, all on one line. Is that possible?
One way to do that is to make sure each of the 3 button images is on the same line in the editor, and make sure they are aligned the same way so they sit side by side: http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/image-alignment/#side-by-side
If each of the images has a caption, each caption will appear underneath its image.
Also, how long do I have until my 30 days are up to decide if I want WordPress to host my site before I change to GoDaddy?
You purchased your WordPress.com Premium plan 33 days ago. If you decide now that you don’t want to keep it, I can refund it for you.
Just let me know if you have any other questions!
-
Hi Christine,
I just made an adjustment to your site. Can you try opening your site again and see if it loads faster for you now?
If you still have trouble with it, please try clearing your browser’s cache and then open the site again.
Please let me know how that goes. :)
-
Hi,
Thanks! It loads MUCH faster!
I am in the process of getting a go daddy web host. I’m finding out what to do
-
If I end up getting moved over before we talk again, thank you SOOOO much!! I couldn’t have done any of this without your help!!

-
Hi Christine,
We have a guide for moving your site to a self-hosted site here: Moving a Blog
If you’d like additional help, we also have our Guided Transfer service: Guided Transfer
You can purchase that from your site’s Store page here:

Hi,
I have moved my site to GoDaddy and I think I am all set.
You had said “You purchased your WordPress.com Premium plan 33 days ago. If you decide now that you don’t want to keep it, I can refund it for you.”
Are you still able to do that?
Thank you for all your help! You have been wonderful!
Christine
