Limitations to free plan vs paid plans

  What are the limitations to a free plan? Can I connect a custom domain if I purchase it from elsewhere? What are the problems with the free vs the paid? Did I miss one of the helpful messages which displays this information?

  In order to set a primary domain, the site would need to be on paid plan: https://wordpress.com/pricing/

  The domain can be connected as per: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/connect-existing-domain/
