how accurate are the location statistics?

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to moderators and staff)

  • Hi @kryzzle, our default stats here on WordPress.com generally group by country using Google maps data:
    https://wordpress.com/support/stats/

Is that precise enough for your needs?

There’s more granular data available through other stats plugins that you can add with the Pro plan if you’d like.

The thing is that I think that somebody is trying to scam me, saying that is from a place when it’s in another, I send him one of my entries and it says it’s in another part of the world, what I need to know if there is any chance to wordprees make a mistake with the location.

  • I’m not sure that I’ve understood the situation you are referring to, can you tell us more about it? Scam how?

I send him one of my entries and it says it’s in another part of the world

How are you sending entries to them? Can you tell us more about what you are expecting it to say (about your location) instead of what it actually says now? Where would I see this location info if you were to send one to us, for example?

    Thanks for the additional info!

Here’s the thing, I met a person and we’re chatting on the phone, I send her the link to one of my entries to know what she thinks. She says she’s in the US, but when I looked at the stat it says she’s in Laos, so I guess she’s lying, or there is any chance that WordPress to make a mistake about the location? I guess not, but I needed to ask.

  • Hi there,

The location stat is based on the IP address of the computer that’s accessing your site, so if the stats say a visit came from Laos, it means the computer was connecting to the internet with an IP address located in that country.

However, someone in the US could be accessing your site via an IP from another country if they’re using a VPN or a proxy to connect to the internet, so it’s not a definitive way to confirm whether or not a specific visitor is actually located in a specific country.

  • @kryzzle, we’ll go ahead and close this thread as it seems to be attracting spammers. Good luck and if you need anything else from us, feel free to open another thread.
