I transferred my domain to WordPress in error. Now I need to transfer to bluehost because I have a hosting plan there and can upload the wordpress site I created in local. The one I have now is free and will not afford me advanced features like piugins and customization. The domain is locked from recent transfer (from Google domains to WordPress). How can I get the registrar Automattic to unlock it. The site is ltcounseling.org

    WP.com: Yes
    Jetpack: No

    Hi there!

It’s not possible to transfer a domain twice within a 60-day window. Basically, when you transfer a domain, it is locked from being transferred again for 60 days. This is a regulatory requirement mandated by ICANN.

However, you don’t have to transfer the domain to be able to use it with another host. If you’d like to use the domain with Bluehost, please ask them for their nameservers, and follow the instructions here to add them to your domain:

Nameservers determine where your domain’s DNS is hosted and managed. This guide will show you how to change your domain’s name servers to point to WordPress.com or any other host. Important Considerations when Changing DNS Changing your domain name’s servers means changing where your domain’s DNS records are managed. DNS records control many things, including: the website available at

Within 72 hours of adding Bluehost’s nameservers, the domain will be pointing to their servers.

You’ll be able to transfer the domain registration itself once 60 days have passed from the date it was transferred to WordPress.com.

By the way, did you know that we renewed your domain for one year, free of cost after you transferred from Google? You may already be aware of this from our Google Domains offer, but I wanted to clarify that your domain is valid till January 19, 2026. So you don’t really need to transfer or renew it until that date, and you can keep using it with your Bluehost (or any other) hosting while the domain is registered with us.

the reason I want to transfer to blue host is because I pay for a hosting plan there that let’s me install and use WordPress with no limitations on my domains. If I point the name servers to blue host will I be able to do that? Will I be able to handle site as if it is hosted by blue host and install my local WordPress file and necessary plugins/themes. If yes then how do I update dns records so my website can be accessed correctly now that it points to blue host name servers?

  • Hi there,

I understand your concerns, and I’m here to help.

If you point your domain’s name servers to Bluehost, you can use it with your hosting plan there and install your local WordPress files, plugins, themes, and everything else just as if your domain was originally registered with Bluehost.

Your domain essentially acts like an address for your website, and by changing the name servers, you’re simply directing visitors to a different “house” (in this case, your Bluehost hosting). It won’t affect your WordPress installation at all.

Here’s how you can update the name servers for your domain and connect it to Bluehost: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/change-name-servers/

I hope this clarifies things for you. If you have any more questions or need further assistance, don’t hesitate to reach out.
