locked out of account

So I just tried to log into my account to make an important update on my website and someone (not in my administration) has apparently been trying nonstop (attempted hack) and now my account is locked. How do I gain access to it without waiting the 720 minutes?

HI, I guess I am not sure what site I should request help at. I used the link in a WP update email sent to me in order to get here to ask for help, so i am assuming I am in the right place. However, I was able to get in touch with my designer and he was able to log in under his name. Here was the issue: My admin login name was similar to my website name, not identical, but close enough for guesswork, and a brute force entry was attempted by hacker/spammer. The solution: Once my designer was logged in, he cleared the block and I could then gain access; since WP does not allow a user name to change, I decided to create a new admin user for myself using a completely different login name from the website name. I first had to change the email address associated with my original username, but then once my new one was created I was able to restrict the role of my original username. All is well now. I hope.

We actually do let you change usernames. Can you confirm what site you’re referring to if you end up needing more help?
It does sound like you’re referring to a site that’s hosted elsewhere.

When I went under my profile, the “username” was grayed out and stated next to it was something like “usernames cannot be changed” so there was no option for that. I can show you a screenshot if images are allowed here. -
Yeah, that site isn’t on our servers. There are plugins and options that can help, though. I’d recommend checking the community over at https://wordpress.org/support for ideas.
Note our Jetpack service comes with some brute force protection, too, so you might consider using that, too.
Also, just to clarify, WordPress.org is free software that you can install, modify, and manage on your own. WordPress.com is a service that manages the installation for you. You can read about the differences here:
