It appears someone tried to log in to my account. What can I check to confirm?

  • Good morning –

The best thing that you can do is double down on your account security. That really applies to all of the online accounts, not just the WordPress.com one.

    Here’s what I suggest.

    1. Change your WordPress.com password. It needs to be strong, complicated, and never shared with anyone else.
    2. Enable 2 factor authorization on your WordPress.com account. This gives your account an added layer of security. Read about it here.
    3. Update the password on your email address (the one associated with your WordPress.com account). Same rules apply, it should be strong and complicated.
    4. Enable 2 factor authorization on your email account as well. That provider can help you with their specific instructions.

If someone tries to reset the password to your WordPress.com user account they will not be able to do so unless they also have access to your email account. The notification that we send with a password reset has to be acknowledged in order for it to actually work. You can ignore any such emails if you aren’t trying to reset the password.
