Lost email when mapped an existing domain to WP
-
I mapped my existing domain to WP, I have my DNS records from my provider (Earthlink), and they seem to be the same numbers/letters (though written a little differently) as the existing ones that display in “my domain,” but my email doesn’t work. Unclear what to do.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

HI there,
I see that you changed your nameservers to ours. In order for you email hosting to work you will need to add custom records.
Here is a support guide on adding email:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/add-email/
Once you get the custom records from your email host, please add those in as stated by the guide above and your email should be working within a day or two. If you need help with those records, please provide them to me and I can take a look!
Let me know if you have any questions with this!

Oh my goodness, Grace–thank you! I’ve been wrestling with this for a couple of days now. I had already accessed the support guide you suggest, but unfortunately my server is earthlink, which is not among those listed.
Let me see if I can be clear:1. The domain I just mapped (and thus messed up my email) is betsyjames.com, NOT my other WP site, listeningatthegate.com.
2.The records given me by earthlink were (transcription of chat:)
LiveChat: Here are the current MX records:
betsyjames.com. 4H IN MX 10 mx1c38.carrierzone.com.
betsyjames.com. 4H IN MX 100 mx2c38.carrierzone.com.
betsyjames.com. 4H IN MX 110 mx3c38.carrierzone.com.
betsyjames.com. 4H IN MX 120 mx4c38.carrierzone.comThose seem the same as those already in place, so I am at a loss. Perhaps they are in a slightly different format, and I’m not clear on how to adapt them? Or is the fact that I have two WP sites adding to the confusion?
Then earthlink, in yet another chat session, said (transcription of chat:)
LiveChat: What I have when I check it is Name Servers
ns1.wordpress.com 192.0.80.93
ns2.wordpress.com 69.174.248.148
ns3.wordpress.com 207.198.112.47
All you need to do is call WP hotline and have the MX servers set to Earthlink for your email to work. This is pretty much all the data I have at this point. I’ve gotten rather out of my depth–yet I’m sure it’s something totally simple. I’d appreciate any help. Thank you!

Hi there,
I just took a peek at your custom email records and it looks like everything is set up correctly. Sometimes it takes a day or two to fully propagate.
If all you need are those MX records then you should be set!
-
Thank you, Grace–can we leave this open for a day or two to see if the email comes through? The domain mapping itself responded almost immediately, but so far still no email.
I don’t know if “all I need are those MX records.” (And I’m even a Word Camp graduate–sheesh!) So I hope it’s okay to wait a bit and see?
-
Yes definitely! If they don’t start coming in, there must be something missing/off with the records.
If not, I’d contact your email host and tell them of the situation. Ask them if any other records are necessary such as an A record, CNAME or TXT record.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Grace–I fixed it! The problem was that mapping the domain to WP apparently required that I change the incoming mail setting on my Mac. There was nothing about this under “mapping an existing domain” in WP support, so I was clueless. Is it only sometimes necessary? All I had to do was ask Earthlink for the correct setting.
Anyway I’m a happy camper now. Whew. it was a long three days of talking to the Philippines!
Thank you so much for taking the time to help.

Me too! Having to talk to the Philippines for three days is almost on a level with bedbugs…well…not quite.
However, the one thing I might suggest is that–unless it’s there and I just overlooked it, always possible–that on the Email section of the Mapping an Existing Domain page, WP add a note that the user may need to adjust their setting for incoming mail, and that this is available from their server. Knowing that would have saved me a world of grief.
Thanks again!

Hi there,
Can you let me know exactly which incoming settings you had to alter? I’d like to make sure, because I haven’t heard of this before, so if our users are having to do this, I’d definitely want this documented somewhere!
Thank you!
-
Sure. Stupidly simple. On my Mac:
Mail Preferences > Accounts > Account Information > Incoming Mail Server.
I didn’t have the right setting for the incoming mail server. Doesn’t make sense to me, since the server itself hadn’t changed. The setting I had–which had worked perfectly for years–was pop.betsyjames.com. When I asked Earthlink what it should be, they gave me pop.hosting.earthlink.net. That worked immediately.
Does that help?
