Autosave happens every 2 minutes. Look in your Admin section to see if it was saved as a Draft Post. Each time you click Save Draft or Update Post (or Page) a revision is saved.
You can look the last autosave for Posts » Post Revisions

Yeah, I looked at the Draft. It was the Draft that had saved earlier although it’s showing it saved at 9:57. There are only 568 words on it.
When I hit publish I was up to 1020-something. Maybe higher.

Just as a precaution for things like this, I always hit the save button every minute or so. I know it takes longer to write a post that way, but in situations like this it can save a lot of headaches.
Also, consider using a blog client such as Windows Live Writer or blogdesk (both free for Windows) or Ecto (reasonable at around $20). They save your posts to your computer hard drive and then when you are ready, they will even upload the images and publish the post for you. No need to even go into the wordpress editor.
Anytime you are working with an online editor such as here at wordpress.COM, this sort of theing can happen, and sometimes it might not even be wordpress’s fault, it could be a general internet issue, or an issue with your modem or your ISP.
Timethief has a very good review of them here: http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2007/10/26/offline-blog-editors-reviews/ .
