Mac app opening pages/posts in browser

Finally found time to work on my website and started testing desktop editing options today. Previously, I had limited success with the WordPress app when testing Guttenberg but the app connected and all of my details appeared as expected. What’s odd, which I don’t remember previously, is when I select to edit a page or post, the app triggers the browser to open that page in edit mode.

I’ve tested on two computers with the same results, found no app preferences that appear to be responsible for this, and haven’t turned up any search hits pointing to a solution. If anyone can get me working, I appreciate the help.

  • Hi there,

This is intentional. The block editor lives in WP-Admin, not in My Sites – even if you open the editor from My Sites, if you have the block editor enabled it’s the WP-Admin editor that loads.

For sites hosted on WordPress.com we’re able to load the WP-Admin block editor inside My Sites, and by extension inside the app, as our system automatically has access to WP-Admin for all sites on our servers.

But for a Jetpack-connected site like yours we don’t have any access to your WP-Admin area in a way that lets us load up the editor from within the app – we can only do that in a browser.

That makes sense, sort of. I expected full functionality through the app and am let down now that I’ve figured out the new block system. It’s still a pain to add blocks, or at least I still have to move the cursor just a certain way for the plus sign to appear.

Is there a plan to eventually add full block capability into the app? I’ve long dreamed of a desktop system for this and, of course, as soon as one comes along at a time I’m interested, the new block system kills the workflow.

    Thanks

  • We do eventually plan to add the full block editor to the app, it’s just going to take a bit of time.

WordPress’s new block editor was essentially created over the spam of 2 years by hundreds of volunteers.

We’re doing our best to re-create the entire experience in the app, but we have a significantly smaller team.

That’s good to know. Can’t believe the timing, but now that the blocks update is in place it should only be a matter of time. I’d consider going back to classic editing, but the blocks render perfectly on my phone so I’ll stick with blocks.

    Thanks again
