Making blog page separate link in menu

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello! Thanks in advance for you help.
I’m trying to create a static homepage as well as a separate menu item for the blog page. I know the default with wordpress.com is to make teh blog page the home page but I really don’t want this, I want an intro homepage.

When I try and create a new ‘static homepage’ the default ‘home’ page disappears from the menu – which is the blog. I can’t figure out how to just make the blog a menu item! Arg! Maybe it’s a limitation of wordpress.com?

    site is nancylamlaw.wordpress.com

    Thank you kindly!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,

I know exactly where you are stuck. But follow this guide and you’ll be fine – https://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/

It’ll help you to create a static page as well as a separate blog page.

If you still need help, let us know :)

    Good luck!

I have exactly the same problem as nancylamlaw. The “front-page” website you gave us, omkarbhagat, says only the following about setting up a blog page:

“you will need to create a new page called “blog” and return to the site customizer, and choose this page from the Posts Page drop down.”

It’s easy to make a new page called “blog.” But I cannot find any information about how to make that new “blog” page actually contain my blog posts.

Could you give us the steps to create a “blog” page that, when readers click on it, takes them to the blog with new posts etc.?

    Thank you.

Hi trileigh! Omar is correct. The problem I ran into, and why it wouldn’t work at first, is because I needed to login as wp-admin as opposed to admin.

When you login as wp-admin, you should be able to follow the steps provided in the video (the link Omar provided). On your sidebar there will be an option, ‘settings’ and within settings ‘reading’. At the very top you’ll see a section called “front page displays’ and some choice beside it.

For the radio buttons, select ‘A static page (select below)’ For the ‘front page’ drop down, select whichever page it is you want to be your static home page.

For ‘Posts page’ select the page you want to behave like a ‘blog’ page. Presumably your ‘blog’ page ;)

    Then ‘save changes’.

    See if that works!

    Hope that helps!

@trileigh when you publish the blank blog/journal/news page all you need to do, as @nancylamlaw said, is select it in the Customizer as the page where your blog posts should show up and the WP software will take care of the rest. :)

OK, it suddenly seemed to work fine! I guess I didn’t do that last step of clicking the button in the Customizer to make that the “blog posts” page. Thanks so much, everyone!
