Mapping to a domain

  • Unknown's avatar

    I am just not totally getting this. I have my own domain (mydomain.com) and a subdomain (sub.mydomain.com).

    Let’s say I want to use the same subdomain name on my site as I did for the blog on WordPress. Can I do that?

    And then, if I walk through the steps of mapping a blog to this subdomain, will it then be *only* at my site (redirected), or will it be both at the redirected site and the (original) WordPress blog? And if I have WordPress posts, are they moved, or do I need to transfer them, and will there then be duplicates at WordPress and on my site?

    I know…I’m just not quite getting it…

    Hopefully,
    Chuck

    I’m hoping that I won’t confuse the issue further for you.

    When you map your WordPress.com blog to a subdomain of your domain, such as blog.mydomain.com, your blog is still physically located on WordPress.com’s servers and, more importantly, you are still bound by the TOS and code limitations in place here. Nothing is physically moved. When someone clicks to view your blog, they will be redirected to blog.mydomain.com rather than seeing it at the underlying WordPress.com address.

    If you would like to be able to run ads, use restricted code, etc., then you would be better off exporting your WordPress.com blog to your own webhost after installing the free WordPress.ORG software there and making your WordPress.com blog private.

    Jennifer;

    So then, I still post and edit and… the same way, all that changes is the URL itself, yes? My account login info wouldn’t change…in effect, the only change is the remapped URL?

    So that even though I have now set up a subdomain, nothing gets “put” there, it’s there to allow the pointer to work?

    If so, I believe I got it now…

    @ritesh2009: ritesh.wordpress.com directs to an empty blog, and the URL does not change to a custom domain name (such as __.com)…

    If you want to remove a domain mapping or change it to something else, you might need to contact staff: http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/
