Maximum page width
-
I’m experimenting with the idea of using WordPress, but can’t get my content to fill the width of my PC screen.
See my site.
Is there a way of showing wider content in the body of the page in the free version?
I’ve tried various themes, and tried ‘Max Page Width’ under Appearance > Template. But none seems to make them much wider.
Thank you.

In general, maximum width means that the theme itself fills up the screen, but the width of the content is often up to the theme’s designer.
I recommend finding a theme that is closest to what you want, and sticking with that. One thing to keep in mind, while a full-width theme is visually impressive, full-width content is often harder to read.
You can modify the appearance further with Custom CSS, but you will need a paid Premium or higher plan: https://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/custom-css/

Thank you, Mac, but I was half-hoping that I might get a steer on free themes which support grids which fill more then 9 inches(?) of my screen width without trawling through all 350 free themes.

I’m a bit in the same boat as you, I’m afraid.
Some cursory looks I don’t see any that are truly going to fill the entire screen with all content, edge to edge.
To limit your options, I recommend starting with these, and you can use the additional filters to narrow it down even further based on what you like: https://wordpress.com/themes/filter/full-width-template+responsive-layout
