I am able to upload media and have created a post with a gallery of images. However, it allows my readers to scroll through my entire media library! How do I make it private?

Nobody except users assigned to the roles Author, Editor, and Adminstrator, or WordPress staff should be able to access your media library. I think you might be referring to images on attachment pages linking to images which may no longer be displayed on the post or page, but once were. This has often happened on one of my websites, on a post where I change the content frequently — a sticky post on the front page. People somehow find images, perhaps through Google images and other image library searches, which I published months or even years ago. The solution is to remove such images from the post/page gallery. It might be necessary to delete them from the media library to prevent access to them.
