Media storage size limit

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, I was close to the upload media size limit at my site, while I started editing the photos – reducing their sizes. Some photos size and storage are smaller now, but that doesn’t seem to reduce the total media storage size.
please advise why is that and how can I reduce storage size without deleting photos
    thx

  • I manually ran a quick total on the files on your site, and it’s coming out to 3,062.51 MB, that’s 2.99 GB.

So, while you have trimmed up some space, it’s not nearly enough space.

I have forced your media library to reflect the correct the total, but at that size, all that’s really done is remove the warning about having passed 3 GB.

0.01 GB (10.24 MB) isn’t much space to work with overall.

If i will trim more pictures (most of them are about 4mb) would it help?

  • A bit, just keep in mind that 1 GB = 1,024 MB.

You can add more space by purchasing a plan: https://wordpress.com/pricing/

I trimmed a lot of picturea now it is showing i have only 4.4mb which also doesnt make sense…

Although i trimmed a lot of pictures from the media folder, it didnt changes the acutal pictures size at the relevant posts i published. How come?

  • Thanks, yeah we’re seeing closer to ~91 MB. We’ll see if we can get that refreshed.

  • Okay, it turns out I was only looking at totals for one set of files. You’re actually still very very close to the 3GB limit.

Please bear in mind too, simply deleting and replacing the images is not enough. You’ll need to replace them in blog posts, too, or they’ll stop working. If you’re shaving off ~2-3MB per file, you’ll need to convert hundreds of them before you’ll see a significant drop in disk space.

    I’d highly recommend upgrading.

  • And, to answer this:

    > Although i trimmed a lot of pictures from the media folder, it didnt changes the acutal pictures size at the relevant posts i published. How come?

Deleting files and replacing them from the media library does not update the post.

If you’re not doing that, can you let us know what you are doing?

As Im not deleting and replacing the pictures but only changing their dimensions which reduce their size it is strabge that the same pictures in the posts published that shouls be connected to the media liabrary arent chainging their sizes as well

  • Changing the dimensions of how the images are displayed in the post only does just that, it does not affect the originals in the media library.

I changed the originals in the library, but it didnt ompact those at the posts. Very strange…

Hi there, What happens when you resize onsite is that WordPress (the software) keeps the original file in case you decide to revert. So no savings in storage space.

In order to reduce the size of your media library storage, you’ll need to download and delete the original from the site, then resize and optimize that image on your computer and then upload it again to the relevant post. https://en.support.wordpress.com/media/image-optimization/ As @supernovia said, you’d need to do this for hundreds of images before you see a significant reduction in your media storage size.

Another option is to embed your images from other sources, like flickr, instagram, slideshare for slideshows.

Also mentioned above, you might consider upgrading to the Personal plan, which will give you another 3GB of storage (for a total of 6) and costs less than 2 small hafuch a month. Upgrading also has the advantage of removing all WordPressdotcom advertising and giving you direct support access by Live Chat and email. Here’s more on the plan features

    Hope that helps

    Thanks. That explains it.
Anyway it seems very inefficent as each picture is actually stored in 3 locations -medua liabrary, original picture back up and in the actual post.
    And I dont drink Hafuch… 😊

You’re welcome. The coffee thing was just a price comparison. The cider in your last post is more expensive. Cheers! :)

  • Images are not stored in posts. They’re only embedded there.

The files exist in the media library, and the HTML in a post just links back to the library.

When you resize an image in the library the resized version is the one that gets linked to, but the original image remains stored in the background in case you want to undo the edits at a later time. So resizing images in the library will actually cause you to use more space, as now both the original and resized file exists in the library.

  • Oops, missed that you already mentioned this in your reply, @justjennifer :)

No worries, @kokkieh thanks for the explanation, which helped clarify for me something I’d been wondering about. :)
