    Hi,
I am struggling to show my blog post in only one aspect of the menu.

    Hi,

Will all of your posts be diary entries, or would you like “Diary Entries” to be one among multiple categories of posts?

    Hi,

Yeah I would like it to be among the multiple categories. So my ordinary blog posts remaining in the blog category. And the diary entries only being in the diary entry category.

    Thanks

Okay. The following support pages are going to be helpful to you in achieving the result you are looking for, if I understand correctly what that is:

    Categories — https://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/categories
    Category Pages — https://en.support.wordpress.com/category-pages/
    Custom Menus — https://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/

Technically, your “Blog” item in the menu is not a category. See the Categories support page. The menu item “Blog” links to the static page which is assigned as your posts or blog page. That link is working normally, and the blog page displays all posts, from the most recent to the oldest.

The “Diary Entries” menu item indicates that you’ve created and activated a custom menu, so you might already be familiar with the Custom Menus support page. However, that item is incorrectly formed, though the two posts are correctly nested under the item so that they display in a drop-down menu when you move the cursor over “Diary Entries.”

The trouble with the “Diary Entries” menu item is that it links to the post “Take 2: Try and Try Again.” Instead, you probably want it to link either to nothing, or to a category page. I will now describe how to achieve each of those results, separately. The drop-down menu below “Diary Entries” in the menu will be remain as it is regardless of which of the following options you choose.

    Options:
    1. Menu item “Diary Entries” linked to nothing — At My Sites > Menu > Menu Structure, click the pencil icon to open the edit options. If necessary, change the link type from post to custom link (paper clip icon). Then delete the address entered in the Link Address field, then click the “OK” button, and click the “Save” button to save your edits.

    2. Menu item “Diary Entries” linked to a category page — See the Category Pages support page. If you want “Diary Entries” to be a one of multiple categories assigned to posts, then you might prefer this option. A category page is created automatically the first time you assign a category to a post, as described in the Categories support page. The same category may be assigned to multiple posts. As you continue to apply the same category to various posts, the length of the corresponding category page grows. It will include every post that has that category assigned to it.

To obtain this second result you’ll need to take the following steps:

    a. Add the category “Diary Entries” to every post you wish to be included in the “Diary Entries” category page.

    b. Edit the menu item “Diary Entries” as follows. At My Sites > Menu > Menu Structure, click the pencil icon to open the edit options. Change the link type from whatever it presently is to the “Category” type. Then choose the category “Diary Entries.” Once you’ve made this selection, click the “OK” button, and then click the “Save” button to save the change.

I noticed something I’d missed previously on your site. The post It’s my birthday! It’s my birthday! has the category “Diary entries” assigned to it. The other post has no category assigned. Rather, it has the tag “Diary entry” assigned to it. Categories and tags are similar but not the same on WordPress.com. See the Categories vs. Tags support page if you’d like to learn more about their similarities and differences.

With respect to option #2 in my previous post here, because you’ve already assigned the category “Diary entries” to a post, you already have a “Diary entries” category page. Its address is https://abistake.wordpress.com/category/diary-entries/. If you would like the post “Take 2: Try and Try Again” to also appear in this category page, simply add the category “Diary entries” to that post as well.

Ahhh oh my goodness, thank you so much! I have been struggling with this for days now. Now I have finally done it. Thank you for taking the time out to help.

I have one more problem, for one of the blog posts I have a specific image that I want to make the featured image. However, the picture seems to be too big and it keeps cutting of my face, how do you suggest I make it smaller?

    Thanks again

    You’re welcome Abi

Before I get to your new issue, please change the link destination of “Diary Entries” to something other than ‘http://diary entries’ which is a non-existent, impossible (it can’t exist) URL. You can leave the field empty, or have it link to a category page, as I suggested above, or even have it link to static page. I’ll respond to the featured image issue in another post ASAP.

    Abi,
    Regarding the featured image problem:
The Sela theme is pretty brutal on featured images, cropping them twice: once into smaller rectangles, and then hacking out a section for the post title. It would be best to stay away from closeups for featured images on posts with this theme. A more distant shot would work better. See the Sela demo blog page for examples of posts with featured images, in each of which the title section cuts out a piece of the image, just as it does on your site.

In a test I tried removing the post title, but the white space where the title would be remained. This suggests that removing the title and the space through CSS customization might be no easy task, but you could try that. Custom CSS would require an upgrade to the premium plan.

Here’s your “Diary Entries” category page: https://abistake.wordpress.com/category/diary-entries/. You might want to change the link URL of the “Diary Entries” menu item to that URL.
