Menu disappearing and replaced with icons, deleted buttons reappearing

    I teach a class that involves students creating their own WordPress sites. Two students have been experiencing odd issues with their sites that I cannot find any support articles about. I have never encountered these issues in the several years I have been teaching WordPress.

    (1) The student created and published their website and everything looked fine, including the top menu. Then, without the student making any edits to the site, the top menu disappeared and was replaced with two sharing icons (icons look like < with squares on the end). The icons link to two of the pages that were in the original menu, but the other menu items have disappeared completely. Why did this happen and how can it be corrected so that it doesn't happen again in the future?

    (2) Whenever the student goes to edit their home page, they have been deleting buttons that were part of the template because they do not want these buttons on their site. Whenever they do this and update the page, the site itself appears the way they intended. However, each time the student goes back in to edit the page, the buttons reappear and he has to delete the same page elements every single time he wants to make edits to his home page. If he doesn't delete the reappeared buttons, they will show up on the site when he updates the page. How can this problem be resolved/prevented so that the same edits don't have to be made over and over again?
