Menus and Sub menus

I have successfully created a structure of menus and sub menus, which works when using as a drop down, but if the menu item is clicked on (rather than hovered over) at the moment my site takes the user to a blank page, rather than the list of options in the sub menu. Can anyone tell me how to do this?
In case further explanation is needed, as I’m not sure I’ve used the right terms. For example if you were shopping online for clothes, you might see a top level menu for Womens, Mens, Sale. If you hover over womens, you get a sub menu for coats, shoes, jeans. (I’ve sorted this part). BUT if you CLICK on womens, you would be taken to a page where your sub menu of coats, shoes and jeans are listed, each with a nice picture. I’d like to do this with my site
