Migrating away from Business Catalyst

  • Unknown's avatar

I have 8 to 10 websites in Business Catalyst, I’m looking to migrate some, if not all of the to WordPress. However, I don’t know much about WordPress. Like where are the site files hosted? What kind of CMS can be used for website end users? In BC you built content holder and placed them in a page template, does wordpress have a comparable method? I really liked the customization of BC, how does WP compare?

  • Hi there,

There are two versions of WordPress: WordPress.com and the self-hosted, open source WordPress software found on WordPress.org. You can see a comparison here:

    https://wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Like where are the site files hosted?

I’m not sure what you mean here. Which files? The files that make your site work will have to be hosted on the server where you set up your site. That can be your own server, the server of a hosting provider you pay for that service, or our servers at WordPress.com if you decide to use our version of WordPress.

Media files are also stored on your server, though it’s also possible to hotlink to media files hosted somewhere else.

What kind of CMS can be used for website end users?

I don’t understand the question. WordPress is a CMS. If your site is built with WordPress, that’s the CMS you’re using, and you can’t use another CMS on top of that.

In BC you built content holder and placed them in a page template, does wordpress have a comparable method?

A WordPress template is applied to the site. Post and pages you publish to the site will be displayed based on the option available in the template you applied to the site.

I really liked the customization of BC, how does WP compare?

It’s impossible to answer this question without know how Business Calalyst works. But a hallmark of the open source WordPress software is its customizability. As long as you are good enough at coding the features you want into a theme or a plugin, the possibilities for extending the default functionality of the software is only limited by the limitations of the code itself, and there are thousands of themes and plugins that already exist – most likely some of them already do what you are looking for. You just need to search for them.
