Migrating followers

  • Unknown's avatar

I have 583 followers currently on my worpress.com blog.
I would like to move the blog to worpress.org so that I can do e-commerce.
Is it possible to transfer my current followers from wordpress.com to the new site at wordpress.org? Or, do I lose my follower list when I migrate?
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi there,

We can help you transfer your WordPress.com and email subscribers to your new WordPress.org site. To do this, you will need to install Jetpack on your new site and connect it to your WordPress.com account.

Once you have Jetpack installed and connected, you can let us know the address of your WordPress.com site and your new WordPress.org site, and we can move the subscribers for you. WordPress.com subscribers will continue to receive updates in the Reader, but they will need to resubscribe on your new site if they want to receive email notifications. Email subscribers will continue receiving updates as usual.

Please let me know if you have any questions about this!

    Thanks Rachel.
I don’t like the idea of losing the email list and forcing people to resubscribe. I’m afraid that the attrition rate of doing that would be considerable.
Would a simpler solution be to just setup an e-commerce page on wordpress.org and keep the remainder of the blog on wordpress.com? Or, is that a bad idea?

Just to clarify, you won’t lose the email list. All of your email subscribers (people who subscribed via email, as opposed to subscribing via the WordPress.com Reader) will be transferred over and will continue receiving emails. The only difference is that WordPress.com subscribers will only receive updates in the Reader (rather than receiving updates both in the Reader and via email).

However, if you don’t want to make that switch, you are welcome to keep your blog hosted here at WordPress.com and have other parts (such as e-commerce functionality) on a self-hosted site. You could use a domain such as yourdomain.com with your self-hosted site and have the blog linked to a subdomain such as blog.yourdomain.com, to keep the two pieces connected. It’s really up to you! :)

Please let me know if you have any other questions about this.

That’s very clear. Thanks Rachel for your help.
I’ve decided to keep my blog at wordpress.com and sell my audio programs at sellfy.com with a link on my wordpress site. This solution provides good functionality with minimal effort.

You’re welcome. I’m glad you found a solution that works well for you! :)
