Missing website

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hello!
I have created the website institutdelamyopie.com around 2018, and it was hosted on WordPress (sure about that). The domain name was purchased with OVH. Lately, I have had an issue with my credit card and had to change it, and during a couple of days, the domain name was disabled on OVH. This issue is now fixed, but the website is still missing. It appears as not installed, and I can’t find any trace of it on my WordPress admin account.
How can I get it back? Is there any backup of it?
Thanks a lot for your help.
    Best regards,
    Valentine

  • Hi Valentine,

The best way to find out where the site was hosted is to check its DNS records. This will basically show you to which servers the domain was pointing.

When you have a look at https://completedns.com/dns-history/, you’ll notice that since 2012, the domain has been pointing to OVH.

To clear up any further confusion, there is WordPress.com and WordPress.org, and they are two different entities.

We, WordPress.com, are a cloud-based platform where we manage WordPress sites, whereas WordPress.org is stand-alone software that you can download and self-host with any other hosting.

You can find more details about WordPress.com and WordPress.org on this support page:

    https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/.

It looks like your site was using the WordPress software but was hosted with OVH. You will need to contact them about the expired subscription and ask if there’s a way to recover your site.

Folks at https://wordpress.org/support/forums/ may also suggest something.

Here, on WordPress.com, even if your subscription expires, your site stays just where it was, so I can’t really advise here.
