  I am not sure which is better for me to do. I plan to travel x-country and want to create a blog that my friends and family can follow.

  Do you mean “move” domain? In other words, you have an existing domain that you want to use with a site on WordPress.com?

  Whether you move/transfer the domain to us completely, or simply point it to us while leaving it registered at your current provider, is completely up to you. It all comes down to which option will be most convenient, and work out the most cost effective for you.

  Either way you’ll need at least the Personal Plan on a WordPress.com site to add your own custom domain.
