Momentarily deleting A record for wordpress site hosted on GoDaddy

    Hello,

We’ve recently set up a new landing page for our domain via Godaddy on a third party app. Our domain is hosted in Godaddy itself so the DNS is configured there.

We created the landing page to take place of the wordpress site momentarily by adding an A record pointing to that IP. However, now we have two A records, one pointing to WP and one to the new landing page site. As a result, the traffic seems to be redirected from the WordPress site to the landing page randomly.

Is there any way we can momentarily remove the A record for the WordPress site from GoDaddy or will that lead to loss of data from our end? Essentially the goal is to have the landing page up until we are ready to restore our website as it were. We tried making the pages private for our WordPress site but it still showed the original WordPress site with an ‘error’ message, not the landing page.

We believe the issue is in having two A records pointing to the same domain, let us know if there is any other way we can resolve this, thank you!

  • A records are controlled where the domain is hosted, in this case GoDaddy, so you’ll be making this change through them, not us: https://www.godaddy.com/help/manage-dns-records-680

With that said, a domain can only functionally have one A Record, so I recommend removing any IPs you don’t want it directing to.

The question is that if we happen to remove the A record for wordpress, will it affect the data we have stored here on wordpress. Our webpages, our content. Or will that remain unaltered?

  • The domain’s name servers are pointed to GoDaddy, so theoretically, if your WordPress site is also hosted with GoDaddy, you can safely remove the A Record.

However, I recommend asking GoDaddy to be sure. We do not control the domain name, and we do not host your site either, so the best we can do is guess.
