Monitization with ads on WordPress.com

I am very unclear about the rules here regarding monitization. All forum post seems to say that either putting ads on your page is not allowed, or only allowed if you have upgraded to Premium or higher, but only with Adsword. Monitization possibilities is usually added as a minus for WordPress.com.

However, on WordPress.com I read that you are allowed to add ads from third party apps and sell space on your page with the Business and eCommerce plans. Is this because of changes to WordPress.com policies recently that reviewers aren’t updated on yet?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

And this is just a general question. E.g if you spend a lot of time with one page that start to have a lot of visitors and you want to monetise on it. Would be kind of waste to invest a lot in one service and not being able to earn from it later. I am not thinking about monitoring the blog mentioned in the post. That popped up there by itself…

  • Hi @valotneb before answering your questions I want to point out that we do discuss the monetization options on WordPress.com here if you have not seen it: https://wordpress.com/support/monetize-your-site/

Advertising is just one of the options, and many bloggers (even with a free plan) take advantage of the ability to add affiliate links for example, to generate income that way.

However, on WordPress.com I read that you are allowed to add ads from third party apps and sell space on your page with the Business and eCommerce plans. Is this because of changes to WordPress.com policies recently that reviewers aren’t updated on yet?

WordAds is our built in ad network. It’s similar to Google Adsense (in that it displays targeted ads to visitors, and you share in the earnings from that traffic) and the reason it is built in is because of the shared hosting enviroment that our free/personal/premium sites use, which is not compatible with 3rd party ad networks.

The reason you have more options under the Business Plan (and higher) is strictly because the business hosting we use allows you to upload any plugin “designed for WordPress” of which there are many to choose from for displaying ads on your site.

If you spend a lot of time with one page that start to have a lot of visitors and you want to monetise on it. Would be kind of waste to invest a lot in one service and not being able to earn from it later

You can upgrade anytime so you are not “locked out” from showing ads on a free site. If you opt to start a site without an upgrade to build an audience (traffic) that is just fine. In fact it is exactly what many blog owners do since you do not need an upgrade to build a following.

Our plans allow you to upgrade seamlessly, so if you discover that your blog is gaining in popularity and traffic, and you would like to monetize it by showing ads, you can do that with no problem. It can be as simple as upgrading to the Premium plan, picking a custom domain for your site (we will redirect traffic to it from the wordpress.com address) and then turning on WordAds.

Same is true for the Business plan. You can upgrade to that you want the ability to upload a 3rd party add network plugin at any time, and it does not change your existing site (so no work is lost) it just adds more capabilities that you did not have before.

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.
