move site to WordPress.com
-
Hello. I have a site built and hosted with register.com. I’d like to move my domain and site (which I’d like to build myself) to WordPress.com. What I’m unsure about is the sequence of events. I’d like no down time for the site. How can I build a site and test it before transferring my domain to WP? How do I then make that site live on the domain?
the site in question is http://www.rdapplianceservice.com
Thanks in advance

Hi doliva1180,
We have an overview of the process for moving from a self hosted site, to WordPress.com:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-from-self-hosted-wordpress-to-wordpress-com/view-all/
You can start exporting and importing content into the new site you create here, choose a theme and make customisations without it affecting the existing site.
before transferring my domain to WP?
It sounds like you wish to transfer the domain to WordPress.com and renew it through us going forward, is that correct?

Thanks for the reply. I’ve reviewed that info and it’s helpful. I think I understand the process of creating a new site and how to transfer a domain. But what I’m most concerned with is the ability to completely build a site on WordPress.com before I do anything with my current site. I want to have everything set up before the transfer so I have as little downtime as possible.
Is it possible to build a new site on a temporary domain (instead of importing existing content) and then once the main domain (rdapplianceservice.com) is transferred to WP.com put that new site on the main domain (rdapplianceservice.com)?

All new WordPress.com sites automatically get a free address the moment they’re created, so you can import your content and set up your site on that free address and only switch your domain once you’re ready.
In fact, importing your content has to be done before you switch the domain, as the original site still needs to be online for you to do that.
You can even ad a plan to the site and make user of the paid features in the plan without connecting the domain – the only exception is that in order to install custom plugins or a theme on a Business Plan site you need a domain connected. But there we can help you to set up the site on a subdomain of the domain you own in the meantime until you’re ready to map the actual domain.
Once you’re ready, just add a domain mapping upgrade and point the domain to us, and/or transfer the domain to us. But this doesn’t have to be done at the point that your site is created.
