Moving an existing site into word press

  I am working as a consult for a client who has a site lfgplanners.com. I am not sure who hosts it or what it is built in, but I would like to move it into word press so that I can easily make updates. If I transfer the domain, will the entire site transfer over as well and go live day 1 or what do I need to make sure happens so that the site is never down for this URL?
