Moving an existing website to WordPress
-
Hello! We have an existing website (energymichigan.org), built on FrontPage, that is old and outdated and hard to update. I’ve been tasked with finding a new platform to use to rebuild the site. From what I’ve read, it seems like a WordPress Personal subscription should do the trick, but wanted to confirm that we can leave our name with our current registrar and move hosting to WordPress. Also wondering if there’s a way to hold off mapping the domain until we have the new site built? Any advice or tutorials you have about moving an existing would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Yes. WordPress.com does not accept domain transfers but mapping an existing domain is possible. http://support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/ The domain or mapping of any existing domain URL is included in the pricing for a personal upgrade, a premium and a business upgrade. The WordPress.COM upgrade for mapping a domain must be renewed annually.
Also wondering if there’s a way to hold off mapping the domain until we have the new site built?
Yes, you can upgrade at any time.

We support importing your blog content from a variety of other blogging platforms, including Blogger, Tumblr, Israblog, LiveJournal, Movable Type, Typepad, Posterous, and Yahoo! 360.
However, as that site does not appear to be one that you can create an XML export file from and then import it, if it does not have an RSS feed you may have to copy and paste all the content to move it.
Let’s ask Staff for advice. I will type modlook into the sidebar tags on this thread for Staff help. Hi there,
There is no easy way to import a static HTML site like a Frontpage site to another platform, as there is no way to export your content from a static site.
It looks like there is a self-hosted WordPress plugin that you can use to try and convert your Frontpage site, but it’s not guaranteed to work. See this old thread:
https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/frontpage-to-wordpress-conversion?replies=3
You can use a temporary WordPress site like http://poopy.life/ (that’s a real domain), or a free host like http://thisistap.com/ to set up a self-hosted site, install the plugin, convert your site, and then create a WordPress export file which you can import here.
Failing that, the only way to move your content over is to manually copy-paste it into new posts and pages on a site here.
You can look at this article for some more information:

Thanks guys! We were planning on rebuilding the site from scratch on whatever platform we end up moving to, so I think the copy-and-paste content transfer method will work just fine for us. Sounds like it should be easy enough – thanks again!
