Moving domain

Hello, I currently have my website through WordPress.org but need to move it to WordPress.com. Can you please advise on how to do it?

  • Sure thing. We have a how-to here:
    https://transferto.wordpress.com/self-hosted-wordpress-org/

I’d recommend moving the site over to a temporary address first, then mapping the domain when everything is ready.

Also, if you have plugins / outside themes that need to be transferred, you can do that, too, but we would recommend the Business Plan and a plugin like All in One Migration.

Let us know if you need more help!

I have a similar issue, but in the opposite direction. I currently manage a WordPress.com site and will soon be moving it to a host (Siteground) where it will be a “managed WordPress” site. The only thing I need from the current site are the media files. I already exported them to an xml file using “tools, export”. When I get the new site going, can I import them? Does the import pull them all from the old site using the URLs in the xml file?

  • @montevista37,

The export file you get at My Site ->Tools ->Export contains links to all the media files used in your posts in the WordPress.com site’s media library, but not the files themselves, as that would create a massive export file that would cause any server where you try to import it to time out.

When you import that file to a stand-alone WordPress site at WP-Admin ->Tools ->Import, the importer should automatically transfer your media files to the new site’s library as the post and page content is imported. Just make sure your WordPress.com site is set to public while you’re running the import, else the importer on the other site won’t be able to access the media files on our end.
