Moving domain from another registrar

Hi! My contract with another registrar is ending on October 9th. They won’t be hosting our domain after that. What is the best way to handle this? I already bought domain mapping (not working yet, apparently the name servers haven’t been updated at their end yet and I can’t do it myself). Will the mapping stop working when they stop hosting the domain? Would it be smarter to wait until that and just register the domain as new? And do you think it’s available for registration immediately after the contract ends?

Thank you for your answers in advance!

  • The hosting is unrelated to the domain mapping (at least on our end). As long as your domain registration is still current and your nameservers are set correctly, your domain will point to your WordPress.com site.

Under no circumstances should you let your domain registration expire with the hope that you can “register it again later”. There is a very real chance that you will lose control of that domain name and never get it back if you take that path. Additionally, even in the best of circumstances, you could be without the domain for up to 90 days.

Thank you for your reply! So, I asked the registrar and they indeed won’t be hosting the domain after our contract ends. Therefore, I should find someone to host it and surely I’d prefer WordPress.com. How can I do this? Can I do this myself? I got a transfer code to be used in this process.

  • While we register new domains here at WordPress.com, we’re not able to accept incoming transfers of existing domain names.

My personal suggestion would be to transfer to GoDaddy or another large mainstream hosting company.

I’ll do that! Or.. rather just did. :) Thank you so much!

  • Happy to help!

    Thanks for using WordPress.
